Instead of more problems that are similar, I use fewer problems but with more questions. We dig deeper into the concepts and connect to as many prior concepts as possible #mtbos ♾️

The first days of school kids create posters for the syllabus, and I fill one wall with those posters (These stay up all year). The other walls have whiteboards. I put a few inspirational posters above those. #iteachmath

Pet Peeve Rant: 😐 ...I really dislike these puzzles where = is used when = is not what is happening. IQ? Is your IQ low if you believe that 4+3=21? #iteachmath #mtbos #edusky. Let's normalize using symbols like ➡️ or ▶️ for these 🙂

Unpopular Opinion. Unless you know for sure that something you want to do requires a college degree, then you should not go to college. There are many cheaper (and more effective) ways to discover your passion and pursue your education. THINK outside the box. #EduSky

Accumulation, related rates, solids (revolution), bounded regions in the coordinate plane (dimensional analysis). I use these concepts often and build throughout the school year... Exploring ideas in Calculus, but without the actual"calculus"

Ahh, the projector. Yes, I used that until they installed my giant TV. They put in the new smart screen tech the summer after I left, so I never got to use that.

I use Google slides. One question per slide. It works pretty well. Each kids gets their own slide deck. When I do textbook items I put page # and item # and they access the digital textbook for those #iteachmath

These particular types equations I really like to introduce with GM ... quadratics with a squared binomial (it helps them avoid the bad habit of "distributing" in error)

Yes, that is exactly how this is introduced. And, it was so interesting when you do this with nothing but that question at the end (I did that as a "building thinking classroom" task). The kids inevitably try to "make" their data linear! They eventually see and go wow!

#eduskychat if you teach math, I have created an entire Algebra 1 course full of free lessons using the #edtech tools I referenced in tonight's chat. (Desmos, Graspable Math, Slides and more). If you are ready to try something different, check it out #iteachmath techknowmath.com

#eduskychat A2: New to many, newer than Desmos, but I have been using it several years >> Graspable Math. Watching the faces of kids who are "doing the math" with this tool is quite inspiring. It is my go-to tool for introducing concepts related to expressions or equations #iteachmath
November 19, 2024 at 2:20 AM
Agreed. Slides can be used for practice, portfolios, demonstrations and so much more.. #eduskychat

#eduskychat A1: Desmos calculator. The tools and versatility is second to none. We dig deep into concepts and simultaneously support struggling learners. It is the Swiss Army Knife of math Tech Tools #iteachmath
November 19, 2024 at 2:09 AM
Not Calculus specific, but I use a variety of tools and push out a slide deck via Google classroom with links out to tasks and each slide will contain questions with links to tools I want them to use. Students insert screenshots of work on whiteboards (or paper) for some questions.

Too much #edtech?

It isn't the medium ... Crappy content and lousy pedagogy is bad for kids no matter how you package it.

We sometimes blame edTech for issues that go deeper than technology. Learn the tech tools and use them to give more kids access to important & challenging work. #iteachmath

#HotTake if you have a criticism of our systems (and I have plenty), be sure to offer alternatives. Even better, show specific things YOU have done that show those possibilities. There are better ways forward ...so, lead the way! #iteachmath #mtbos

Kids need a way to create digital portfolios. Right now we use Google slides, and cut, paste from Desmos. It would be VERY helpful to have a space to create and gather artifacts (graphs, text, equations, images, video) & arrange into something attractive. This was in Jamboard. RIP 🥲 #iteachmath

Cold weather is on the way, but in the meantime, this could be the perfect time to put some math on the sidewalk! Enjoy this fall weather while you can! 😊 #iteachmath #mtbos

Desmos is fun. 🥳 Ask the kids to create their own versions using a variety of functions. #iteachmath
November 14, 2024 at 8:51 PM
Sure 😊 #iteachmath ....I have had many iterations over the years, so this may not be the exact problem that was on the poster
November 14, 2024 at 8:44 PM
1 rich problem is much more powerful than dozens of practice items. Give kids big ideas to chew on. Dare to step outside the curriculum guide 😊 #iteachmath #mtbos

Rich tasks,... "building thinking classrooms" has some good ideas. I discovered it is more about the work that is being done. The math should be low floor, very high ceiling and requires something beyond skill tasks. The ladder problem is a fun one
