Passionate about improving literacy for ALL students.
History has PROVEN that there were YT folks who would intentionally exaggerate or outright lie about what a Black person had done or not done to ENSURE that the Black person was punished. Emmett Till was a public case of this. What often blows my mind, is that it’s STILL happening. 🤨🧐

I ache in this moment. I see what adults are dealing with on a daily basis in this country. My concern is our children. Are we seeing them? Are we seeing what THEY are experiencing and are we addressing those needs in the spaces where our children spend most of their time: in schools?

There’s a LOT of “When people show you who they are, believe them” happening. I just wonder if folks are paying attention.😒

Instruction that develops accurate reading and spelling is the result of knowledge about phonology, orthography, morphology, and etymology. These were NOT elements I understood well, even after getting a Master of Arts in Teaching.

Up to prepare for a tutor session with a MS student. It’s interesting to me that so MUCH of what I now know did NOT come from my Master of Arts in Teaching OR my 14 years of experience in a school building, 10 of those as an actual classroom teacher.

This was definitely interesting, but for me, now that I’m more aware of morphemes, it was easy to explain the words REALLY and STOPPER. I’m going to enjoy listening to the rest of this.

What is the definition of insanity? Why isn’t an understanding of that definition helping us in literacy practices and the laws being passed?

Retention is punishing the student for what the education system didn’t teach them. I’ve been watching this failure for 6 years.

I don’t often read fiction lately, unless I’m sharing a book with the students that I serve. This audio book reminds me too much of the cruelty of the South that I had read about as a youth. I prefer non-fiction.

In-service teachers need more than a 3-day or weeklong training course. Once trained, teachers need support and coaching. I’ve been saying this for 5 years now.

Too often the academic struggles of Black/Brown students are ignored or minimized limiting the support actually received.

In literacy, educators are NOT undedicated, they are too often just NOT trained well enough to ensure that they can improve literacy.
January 18, 2026 at 10:35 PM
I hope we understand that students who struggle to read/write don’t stop growing/developing while we try to figure out how to serve them better. They just stop believing in the possibilities for their own lives. Is that REALLY the life we want for the next generation?🧐🤨

I will CONTINUE to say this: Teachers can’t teach what they don’t know. I had a Master of Arts in Teaching and taught both kindergarten and first grade for 10 years, but I had NEVER been taught HOW to teach a child to read.

After 5 days of delivering teacher trainings, I’m up to plan 2 tutor sessions: a third grader and a 7th grader. I LOVE that I get to apply all the work I do with teachers daily to what I know students need to become literate.

Insanity is doing the same thing over & over again expecting different results. In this country, there are 68 MILLION functionally illiterate Americans. We didn’t get here because we are teaching reading well. We are missing far too many children who are slipping through cracks we refuse to seal.
January 17, 2026 at 1:58 PM
When we think about literacy, the school can’t control what happens in the home of a family. Yes, we HOPE parents are reading to their children, but that won’t TEACH children to read. Only INSTRUCTION teaches children to read. Is the instruction EFFECTIVE should be the ask.

How many educators know the signs of dyslexia? What are the next steps if a student shows signs of dyslexia? Do we all understand that students are moving beyond third grade with dyslexia? Are students being identified and supported BEYOND grade 3?
