Yeah I will grant that when they film them as if you're just in the audience they can fall real flat

Fair enough, but like a good bottle episode of a tv show sometimes sticking to a script written for the stage is a fun constraint to work in. Rope's meticulously choreographed oner, 12 Angry Men's dramatic close ups, Noises Off's pov shots from backstage etc

You also get to control the camera, which is huge. I've seen a lot of filmed live performances and a lot of straight film adaptations of plays and the difference between the two is huge. Attending the play is ideal but as someone who grew up in the woods I always appreciated a proper film version

Beyond the obvious (making it accessible to people outside a metro area and preserving it for the future) I think there's a lot of creative space in kinda straight adapting a play. You can subtly grow and shrink the set like in What Happened Was, or add context to the performance like Vanya on 42nd

People will yell about accessibility, but accessibility is a braille translation, not a book rewritten as if it was a simple english wikipedia entry. Sometimes the friction is needed to appreciate the art, and sometimes you have to build your fluency up to appreciate something. That's just culture!!

Lol. What would "natural" difficulty even look like through this lens? That art team balance the game?

Sparknotes is a whole industry. "Inception Ending Explained" is a whole industry. How many people have you heard get frustrated over not being able to engage with Abstract Expressionism. The problem is certainly not unique to games
