I do nacho reviews on Instagram and mostly yell into the void against authoritarianism on here and the other word apps.
I watch this video at least once or twice a season. And as always, shout-out to John Kuhn for the awesome cut block on Julius Peppers.

I can absolutely get behind that, and it will depend on what data Waymo has, what data third parties have, and the specific regulations that the city council is looking to pass. But that's all far more nuanced than the "driverless cars are bad" reaction that I'm seeing on Mpls Bluesky

I'm extremely open to critiques of Waymo as a company and whether or not their cars are safe enough to provide enough of a benefit with the drawbacks. But having "job loss due to new technology" as the cornerstone of the argument seems like one against modernization as a whole.

I think we need social programs, up to an including UBI to solve these problems, but framing it that way makes it sound like a line you could have used against any technology in the past thousand years. "I don't support the printing press because it will put copiers out of work."

I don't know who the Dems hired for social media but they absolutely know what they're talking about sports-wise and aren't paid enough

Also, while I agree with the concerns on money going away from the metro, can you explain what you mean that you're "not in favor of job losses?" There are a lot of policies out there that are absolutely good things for society but cost jobs (reduction in mining in northern MN for one).

I agree that there's never going to be 0 risk, and of course Waymo is trying to get out in front of liability- they're a company who only cares about their bottom line. What I'm interested in is how much of a difference in risk there is between human and non-human drivers, and if it's worth it.

Agreed again! I'm just not seeing the exclusivity between the two. I would love the majority of trips to be via walking, transit, bikes and e-bikes, and then whatever cars being on the road to be as safe as they can be.
December 4, 2025 at 5:28 PM
I welcome any changes that lead to less fatalities on the roads. My point in the post you replied to is also that we don't know for sure, but we do know that humans are the main cause of accidents. As such, I would like more information about how self-driving cars can potentially reduce accidents.
December 4, 2025 at 5:25 PM
Agree completely! Transit needs a much higher budget to make it so it is a viable way to travel around the cities without double or triple the time that it would take to drive. But that doesn't seem to be mutually exclusive with allowing Waymo to pilot here.
December 4, 2025 at 5:22 PM
My focus here is mainly the safety aspect. Do you have more information/data on when you say that the safety argument is not compelling and that Waymo doesn't actually enhance safety? From my understanding humans are the most dangerous part of being on the roads as a driver, biker, or pedestrian.

I absolutely agree with you about the labor elements of Waymo- by definition you are replacing labor with capital. Money going out of the city short-term is correct, though as will all technological advancements that can change over the long run if local companies start up/take over marketshare.

I agree that this is a terrible economy to have layoffs in, but if they're trialing it now I highly doubt the entire rideshare sector would disappear overnight. Would need more information about what the rideshare industry did in SF/other areas where Waymo is present.

I am absolutely asking for a solution for bad drivers. I bike around North Loop plenty during the summer, and I absolutely would love to have automated cars who can detect me with LIDAR rather than relying on people to not take right turns in front of me/pull out of parking areas.
December 4, 2025 at 5:13 PM
I don't know what the actual numbers say of how many lives can be saved by moving away from human drivers and what the other negative effects might be, but that's why I want to get more information and have a discussion about it rather than just rejecting the premise outright.
December 4, 2025 at 5:11 PM
1. From my understanding we can't charge a human either unless they're breaking a law, and even then good luck.
2. You could absolutely bring a civil suit against the company.
3. The point is to reduce the amount of deaths period. I'd rather have one person die via Waymo than 1,000 die by humans.
