So I have a lot of plugins I use for sound design. In this case I’m trying to create a fx send for Malcolm’s voice for when he voices this demon speaking inside one of the player’s head.
There are two different kinds of glitching fx & one multi fx processor.
I want it to sound weird but intelligible

I’m not sure if I’d touch any of the other settings. Just turn it up until the other players say you sound good.

Definitely want to keep it on Cardioid. And also. And I hate to say this but it’s super common… make sure you are talking into the front of the mic where the mute button is and not the top. All the time on TikTok and YouTube I see people talking at the top dome part.

We’ve started trying out Riverside and StreamYard. They are like Zencastr. I just make sure their “studio sound” and noise reduction is disabled.
So far it’s worked out well. Not as good as recording locally but it’s not a difference anyone would notice.

And I make my friends record their audio on their PC their pc without any processing then send me the files. I like it up manually with the OBS video. Time consuming AF, but it sounds good that way.

Any kind of streaming noise reduction can make you sound
Brittle and harsh. So maybe whoever is running the OBS session or Zencastr has noise reduction turned on.
I have special post-production software that cleans up the noise after recording.

Yeah that’s a good indicator. Test every link in the chain until you find the break.
Discord and Zoom are notorious for creating this sound like your underwater. It’s an artifact of their data compression and noise reduction.
November 20, 2025 at 9:40 PM
What platform are you recording with? Zoom? Discord? Riverside?

Or are you going through OBS?
There is a chance it could be a combination of the mic and whatever platform you use.

One way to test is If you were to record straight into Audacity or Garage Band and see how it sounds then.

If your turn everything off, does it still sound tinny?
I would honestly bypass their software altogether.
November 20, 2025 at 8:28 PM
Hey, I’ve found that if you use their noise reduction software that comes with it, it makes it very harsh and brittle (probably what you are describing as tinny).
It’s already kind of a bright sounding mic.
A “gate” might be cutting off your words

BTW, are you the person I was talking to on Reddit?

1. Video recording from OBS/VDO.Ninja
2. Turd Polish is where I send the "Safety" Loopback recording of the whole session in case anyone loses their local file or has a bad recording.
3. Is my Dialogue Folder track where I do some group leveling and EQ and FX sends
4-10 are the individual players

Here is a Zoomed in look look at my first 10 tracks and a zoomed out look at 10 episodes waiting to be edited with Music, Ambience, FX and Virtual Instruments.

Reaper Blog has some great written resources. reaper.blog/course/reape...
His tutorial videos are great also but ReaperMania is the GOAT for short videos on single features.
This 4-part series is gold: youtu.be/mL1aUJuODt8?...

This guide will get you started though it’s a little out of date. Ignore the Lufs plugin and TriLeveler suggestion. LUFS is built in now and TriLeveler is unstable now.

Happy to point you to other resources and answer questions!

Reaper users are basically a cult. So be ready for that. lol. So yes, I love it.

It’ll run on a potato.
It’s fast.
It will take any kind of file, even video.
Endlessly customizable. (Which can be intimidating)
It’s entirely non-destructive so you never touch your original audio.

This I can probably do. I have DaVinci Resolve Studio which has an Atmos renderer also. This is an excuse to learn how to use it!
