In my experience, young scholars are discouraged from writing in the style of this 1999 essay. Yet, RWG's style is convincing and cuts clearly to the issues of expanding carceralism. Moreover, she published this essay just a year after graduating with her PhD.

even though Ruthie published this essay 17 years prior to Hinton's work, I think it's appropriate as a follow up. I particularly like how clearly RWG's point of view comes through in this essay.

Young's discussion of cultural imperialism, Murakawa's explanation of how liberals built prison America, and ideas of freedom discussed in the U.S. constitution and Du Bois's Black Reconstruction. I look forward to discussing the central question (pictured here) with students!
