I—a sinewy, bespectacled 20 something looking black guy with semi-freeform locks and a short beard/mustache combo—am standing near my desk, which can be seen just behind me, as i scroll on my phone. One hand rests in the pocket of a pair of light khaki pants, held up by a pretty generic looking silver buckled black belt. The white strap of a tote bag is visible on my shoulder and the dark beige crop top I’m wearing has Sunflowers by Van Gogh printed on the center. Behind me is the unframed front page of the an issue of the Wall Street journal from August of 2021. The headline reads “Taliban Seize Power as US Retreats”. You can just barely make out the photograph of the Taliban guys posing triumphantly on the tank.
