They had to photoshop the pic to repost this year, because none of these guys have friends who want to spend the holiday with them.

I suspect this includes people who helped act as translators etc. for American troops and government agencies in Afghanistan, and are now threatened by the Taliban.

Currently enjoying re-reading @lucyworsley.bsky.social 's excellent Agatha Christie bio. Found this by accident -- 1921 census showing AC staying with other guests at Major Belcher's home near Windsor. Belcher was one of Archie's friends but he's not there on a Sunday. Working or as LW mentions

Sometimes they have multiple guys in there with them, so I don't know how that's going to turn out!

Famous Canadian artwork by Ken Danby -- "At the Crease", 1972. I think this was back before they began painting the crease blue (lines in front of net are shown in red). Goalie usually stands in this area, though they can leave it if they want to try to prevent longer shots from reaching the net.

His son Eric was still around until last year (died age 93).

whaling stations on the coast that operated into the middle of the last century. One of my relatives worked at the Coal Harbour station, which I think closed around 1967. The local museum still has some of the tools and whale meat boxes they used back then.

seem to feature one, or more often two straps.
The problem may be that 1) the pack is over-filled, and/or 2) the strap(s) aren't tightened. I don't own one of these packs, but on similar ones there's often a drawstring with a cord lock at the top of the bag, and tightening it can also help.

In the spirit of Ed Zern's infamous review of Lady Chatterley's Lover in Field and Stream ... it seems like an assessment of Herschel's backpacks has slipped into Ryan Lizza's recent article. I don't know which model Olivia Nuzzi owned, but the ones at herschel.com/shop/backpacks with a top flap

Thanks to you and Molly for passing this along. I checked my friend's book (ironically, a critique of using computers in the classroom) and it's in there. Messaging him now.

Like you were doing with the other cards (Four of Cups etc.).
If you were doing other cards in that suit, could use repeats with Sean drinking wine, or pics of Anthony on other shows
(with Real Housewives etc.).
A bunch of stuff with him on Getty etc.
I know -- a lot of work!

Found a weird sad story, about the end of Ferranti (the UK tech company). Apparently they bought the US company ISC, hoping to expand their operations. It turned out that they'd been conned. It's pretty grim. My friend Eunice Moss used to work for them (but before all of that).

This is so cool!
A couple of pics from the Meiji era in Japan, 1890s? No pegs, the clothes are draped over poles, and the cedar boards (arai-hari?) are for kimono that are sometimes disassembled to wash. I think they used seaweed adhesive (funori?) to hold the cloth on.

As a cis woman, I admit that suspenders are pretty cool! I recently installed the buttons for them on some winter wool pants that were a bit large for me -- and presto, I don't have to worry about them falling down!
Also I'd coveted this clip-on type. Overjoyed to find a pair at the thrift store

I've got another scofflaw here! That ticket clearly isn't for the SkyTrain in Vancouver, yet he boarded at some point! Also, he stole a knife from a crime scene.

Victoria can try this!

He'd probably demand that they be expanded to 3" -- which would be appropriate, since an awkward orange thing that takes up valuable resources, is almost useless, and gets in the way, would be on brand for him.
BTW I noticed this on eBay. Seller claimed "mint damage", but I'm skeptical.

Interesting thing about pennies in traditional American magic. The most powerful penny seems to be the "Indian Head" -- not Indigenous but Liberty in a feathered head dress. Nailing them over your doors/windows could ward off "the Police, INS, social services, DEA, collection services, IRS"

So if I see people waving one of these flags around, and they aren't in some kind of educational display or historical re-enactment ... I'm going to wonder about that. It's not as bad as the situation with the old South African flag. But -- that flag isn't us, the country we are today.
November 10, 2025 at 10:31 PM
I see they've co-opted part of the national coat of arms (that appears on the old Red Ensign flag, which they've also appropriated at their rallies). Not just that, but the maple leaves on the shield appear green. I'd recalled them being red, and when I looked into it -- they're going very far

I noticed this on eBay last week. Seller was claiming "double strike or mint damage" -- no way, coining machinery doesn't leave that kind of impression.
