Great piece @chiddickstree.bsky.social - I’ve visited the battlefields and memorials several times and still can’t quite get my head around the hundreds of thousands of lives cut short - many simply disappearing off the face of the earth without a trace 🌹

Having researched all 15 names on a local WW2 memorial, currently hidden away in storage. I was shocked how few died in direct combat. Many of these young men died as a result of accidents, misadventure, or the hidden dangers of war - yet each life mattered 🌹

Able Seaman (Gunner) Sidney Benjamin Quarrinton, a former electricity meter reader aged 24, was lost at sea on 23 Aug 1941 🌹 His ship, MV Stork, carrying aviation fuel to Gibraltar, was torpedoed. Just 3 of 22 crew aboard survived.
