actually i was complaining about it in DMs with someone who doesn't play the game and since i had to put my thoughts into words i might as well share those thoughts
Screenshot from discord DMs by me (talysalankil), reading: so the character Palawa Joko was first introduced in guild wars 1 in 2006. he was locked away (as ancient liches tend to be in fantasy) and the player sets him loose because we need his help crossing an evil undead poison desert. to keep it simple. then we never really deal with the fact that we released an evil undead lich. next thing we know is from the dev releases explaining the story in the 250 year timegap betwene guild wars 1 and 2, and how in that time, he's basically taken over the entire country from that expansion and turned it into his undead fascist totalitarian regime, where living people are basically the underclass. but we just hear about it and at the time (2012) it's mostly an excuse for why we can't go back there yet because they're building a whole new game and need to build the world at their own pace y'know. so then 2017 rolls around, we get an expansion where we're finally going back to that region (for unrelated reason, chasing a different bad guy). and so we cross that evil undead poison desert again and end up in his fascist state. and well, it's 2017 and the arenanet studio is overall a really progressive place with a lot of leads who are queer and/or trans so you can imagine they had Thoughts about fascist regimes lol. so it's really on the nose stuff, living people are the designated underclass and undead are placed above them, children are taught propaganda where Joko is the hero who did all the things we (the gw2 player) have been up to to save the world. and also they have their own "heil hitler" in the form of the phrase "praise joko". Screenshot from discord DMs, part two: and then it just…becomes a meme? among players? to go "praise joko". i don't have an explanation. people think it's fucking funny i guess. in 2017. when trump's first presidency just started. i have to assume some cryptofash were involved but i have no proof of it that said, to add a little bit of context for my personal hatred for it, this also came right off the heels of earlier in 2017, where a bunch of alt right twitter trolls basically got one of the devs fired because she insulted a youtuber after he mansplained development to her. i don't think the two events are formally linked but the firing happened in july and the expansion launched in september so it was still french on my mind anyway, in the expansion plot Joko is again a secondary villain who gets trapped in a parallel dimension, but in the story patches we got to dealing with his fascist regime, and our dragon daughter (it's part of the plot, we basically raised a dragon) eats him to protect us from him, and since she's a dragon in guild wars 2 lore, she eats his magic along with him, which prevents him from reviving himself, what with being an undead lich and all that. that was in 2018 and yet people are still going on about it Screenshot from discord DMs, part 3: some people are justifying it because in that arc where we take him down, he reveals that he knows ~things~ about the greater plot (tldr we're killing dragons who are magically eating the entire world, but those dragons are also kinda foundational to the world so in the long run we're gonna have to deal with that, and by the long run i mean the next expansion). like the intent is very much "he's fine with the status quo because he's an undead lich who benefits from it and thinks the dragons won't eat HIS face, whereas we have to deal with the dragons because they are actively eating our faces even if it's sad and tragic and cause more problems down the line. and also he's a fascist and fuck him." literally in his death scene he's trying to give a grand speech about how unstoppable he is and our dragon daughter eats him mid-sentence, which is as much disrespect as i think was possible to show towards the character. and yet, people act like ~he was right all along~ even though he was doing fuck all about the underlying problem screenshot from discord DMs, part 4: i think the memeification isn't helped by the fact that the devs have been playing along with the meme since Joko's death. a copy of him is now part of the halloween event where he's having a big homoerotic rivalry with the king of halloween, which feels very "south park has satan fuck donald trump" of them. and also now that we have housing in the game, they added the option to build statues to him that you can interact with to make your characters go "praise joko" in game. i also hate those. idk i know it's meant as a joke (at least on the devs' end) it's just one of those things that really gets me y'know. like when i see gamers going "PC master race" for instance. i literally got in trouble in a twitch chat recently because someone said that and i went "do you really want to be using 'master race' right now during the rise of a fascist group" and the person who said it started crying about how they didn't like being accused. fucking little bitch baby.
