do LLMs have knowledge of their own token boundaries?
here deepseek claims to be counting per-token in an array. is it correct?

you could RL this, right? is there any point in doing so?

it turns out that as we've been designing for an agent, we've really just been designing for people. giving the right amount of guidance with a strong design system and simple controls gives really great results.

here's one more bonus sneak peek of another concept we're exploring: imagine pointing to a part of your app and asking for a change, without ever looking at code. that's what you can see here:

here's what the next evolution of agent-created apps with replit will look like (still in beta, coming soon!). infinite customization to make your app look exactly how you want, with a few clicks.
and the agent has access to the same simple controls, too.

i whipped up this prototype of how we could make agent-created apps feel personalized and unique. building on the excellent @shadcn.com ui library and some color math to generate themes on the fly with simple controls.

design systems help you make great looking apps without sweating the details. you don't have to wonder if what you're making will look good, everything just works together. this is great for AI agents! the better your design system, the better your results.
November 19, 2024 at 6:45 AM
what we had effectively done was create a design system for the agent. design systems are a really important tool for building quickly, and making sure your designs look good. and AI systems love them!

here's a very scientific chart of the results we found. the less css the agent wrote, the better the results were. this is true for people too btw

we knew we could get the agent to do better. we created a new "replit agent" bootstrap theme, that made apps blend in as if they were part of replit.
November 19, 2024 at 6:45 AM
i'll start at our agent launch this summer. at the time, an app created by the agent would've looked something like this. they were simple and barebones, and used bootstrap css for styling.

you know what i mean if you've ever gotten lost searching in the AWS dashboard. even the biggest companies in the world often can't do good design. it isn't a function of how much money you have, it takes dedication and attention to detail.

there's basically one hard problem in making an AI software designer:
most software isn't very well designed!

My father-in-law is a programmer. He is insanely gifted. We were looking at Hypercard together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer...
"We can't, we don't know how to do it."
