Furrys have been the internets punching-bag before 2006 all for being the easiest-target out of all LGBTQ-positive communities. It all boils down to thinly-veiled homophobia. The most self-concious and least-validated people enjoy the thrill of bigotry when "cringe" is the new "degenerate".
