I already regret making an account
I think the closest allegory for this is Ruroni Kenshin which basically got deleted from people's memory here in the US.

I watched like 3 episodes of this series back when it aired and for some reason I still remember the theme song.

Yeah the retinal implants. Too expensive to improve on and not profitable enough to continue making parts for. People left slowly going blind again because they lack market share.

How an investigation gave voice to people whose bionic eye implants went obsolete
What happens to users of cutting-edge implants when the only company that makes the technology runs out of money? That’s…

Ah yes the nightmare scenario of people's disability aids for vision and hearing becoming defunct because IP got sold to private equity that had no interest in maintaining it or making it accessible. Just another unused valuation asset to put in their dragons hoard of a portfolio.

There's also that exponential increase in materials and technology and expertise that goes into making machines that do *more stuff*. Not only the physical capabilities but programming it to interact with the real world. At a certain point it really is just "intellectual property" that drives it.

More than that when it comes to machines that need to interact with the physical world they're really not very good at it. It's easy to make a robot that cuts vegetables but difficult to get it to cut *every* vegetable or in more than one way. That's why the most common kitchen robot is a blender.

End result is always stuff that, because a ton of loose adjustability was built into it, has 20x the failure points and half the efficacy.

Every time I design something to be purpose built for a single focused purpose I get a request that it also do 5 to 6 other things or have the option to do so. Committing to one thing is efficient but it doesn't let you chase the economic red dot nearly as fast.

This guy is good for one thing, which is reposting CSPAN clips, and should otherwise refrain from expressing his inarticulate dumbass opinions.
