In the late 1980s, I had concert tickets to Moody Blues, with The Fixx as opener. Our seats were displaced by a platform for audio gear. The usher smiled and said, "Don't worry -- you've been taken care of." She led us to row three, center, and asked, "Are these okay?"

Yes. Yes, they were okay.

People think Siri and Google Assistant and Alexa (and so on) only listen when their name is spoken, but *how do these people think they know when their name is spoken*?

Do the math.

All else aside, I really wish that bloviating fool would learn the difference between proper and common nouns and stop capitalizing half his words.

One of my wife's friends just remarked that it will take two years to cover the Kennedy Center interior with gold spray paint.

Almost forgot: "Asset Manager Studio" is a free third-party alternative to Launcher, runs natively on Linux. Not perfect, but pretty good and gradually improving. If you're on Unreal Slackers (ironically, a Discord server), look for the \#linux channel on that server. You can get great help there.

Finally, for your Git problems consider the "gitk" tool, or, if you really just need to clone the Unreal repo, just clone it from the command line.

JetBrains Rider, my Unreal IDE of choice, has extremely nice built-in Git support, too.

And speaking as a Yank, I don't blame you for wanting to divest American tech companies. We who don't agree with this regime are working hard (but non-violently) to replace them and hold accountable the violators of Constitutional rights. I've run Linux since 1998, for privacy/freedom reasons.

I revisited your article; your switch to Ubuntu was probably a good move for your first Linux foray. Debian (from which Ubuntu is derived) also runs Unreal just fine. The Nvidia world i better if you use the new nvidia-open driver set; they've deprecated the old closed-source ones (good riddance).

Linux only invokes that option when it's *so* low on memory that the only other alternative is a kernel panic (that is, a system crash similar to a BSOD in Windows). Linux can swap to disk (like the Windows paging file) when it's just a little low on RAM.

I run Unreal Engine solely on Linux (editor; I target multiple platforms). You're right about there being challenges, but it's definitely doable, and there are a fair number of us doing so. Many plugins that don't officially support Linux are fairly easily ported. "Come on over -- we have cookies!"

Would you also apply that logic to social media, which you and I are both using right now? Do you have a Facebook account, a Microsoft Windows 11 PC, an Alexa or other "smart speaker"? Do you use Siri or Google Assistant?

Refusing to use AI solves nothing. Informed policy advocacy is needed.

For models trained on public information, there is probably a strong case for mandating public ownership of the model, and GPLv3 might be a good pattern for that. It's also commonplace to train neural networks on private data only, which is a different ethical/legal context.

We have plenty of talking points. What we need more of are knowledge, thoughtful discussion and debate, and well-informed public policy for transparency, accountability, privacy protection, and safety.

Social media is also a tool of Fascism, and yet here you are. The printing press, film cameras, and broadcast radio were tools of Hitler and the Nazis.

These are also our tools for justice.

I support transparency and regulation of AI, but *people* are the ones accountable for how they use tools.

This made my day so much better, to know that there are still a few shreds of decency left.
