David Peterson to the Astros, Christian Walker to the Mets - someone make it make sense

I just knew Craig was gonna pop up here talking about Simmons

Recency bias is a hell of a drug
December 10, 2025 at 3:14 AM
He's fine, but Wilson's use of Garver often is undesirable. Bringing the guy into pinch hit in the 5th inning and then sticking with him through the rest of the RHP the other team brings out is brutal

If the "3rd time through the order" SP penalty was a person

Law started Ford at 49 when he first appeared on the list in '22 and he's only declined since then. More important than the numbers, though, is his explanation. Ford has not improved defensively or in unlocking power, and Law thinks the chances are falling.

2. What round you were drafted carries more weight than it should
3. They're looking at year end statistics not underlying skills
4. They don't even update during the year, just once before each season begins

I don't think any of them said "notoriously bad," that's my interpretation based on what these folks say and how wildly off Pipeline is (although Churchill definitely goes in on pipeline).

Pipeline is bad in my estimation bc: 1. They don't actually scout the players
December 8, 2025 at 3:15 PM
For better scouting, take your pick:
Keith Law (The Athletic)
Kiley McDaniel (ESPN)
Eric Longenhagen (Fangraphs)
Baseball Prospectus
Joe Doyle (Overslot podcast, Future Stars Series)

For Mariners specifically:
Jason Churchill (Future stars series, Baseball Things)

I think they sort of revel in taking it
December 7, 2025 at 11:13 PM
oh, me too, man. I thought Kelenic would be so good!
December 7, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Oh man, especially if Dan Wilson is gonna pinch hit Garver in the 5th inning and we have to watch him get roasted by high leverage guys for the rest of the game
December 7, 2025 at 6:25 PM
Yeah, I see a lot of fans saying that, but no prospect evaluators or national baseball people.
December 7, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Keith Law's take on Ford's last 2 years is that he has not improved in either the power department or the ability to catch. And he's a pretty damned good prospect evaluator.
December 7, 2025 at 6:24 PM
I think you're falling into the trap of believing MLB pipeline rankings, which are notoriously bad. The industry consensus on Ford is that he is not ready to defend as a catcher and cannot hit enough to start anywhere else. Not a great chance he fixes either problem. Might just be a utility guy.
December 7, 2025 at 6:13 PM
He struck out 4.5 batters for every 1 that he walked. He doesn't give up homeruns. All of these things are better indicators of future performance than the era that you are looking at. Teams dont look at era - Cease just got 30m a year w a 4.55. Williams got 3 years w a 4.79
December 7, 2025 at 6:01 PM
Seems like fans are clowning it but baseball folks think the Ms did well. Ferrer is great and Ford is still a long way from being an everyday catcher or hitting enough to play anywhere besides C
December 7, 2025 at 5:27 PM
Doesn't seem like it's built on hope to me? 28% K rate and 2.14 xFIP in high leverage situations built on:
December 7, 2025 at 5:25 PM
Nah, Dan Wilson refuses to use Munoz in any place other than the ninth
December 7, 2025 at 5:54 AM
💯 love this as an Ms fan
December 6, 2025 at 9:48 PM
Now I only have to find the other 3302 people that visited fangraphs more than me. Mystery mostly solved!
December 5, 2025 at 2:38 PM
think this signing is pretty solid evidence they're moving Berrios to the long-man role
