Depuis quelques années maintenant, Apple a décidé de nettoyer ses systèmes d'exploitation en supprimant le code x86 32 bits, que ce soit dans le système lui-même, mais aussi dans les API. Depuis macOS Catalina, il est plus ou moins impossible de lancer une application 32 bits, ce qui a empêché de nombreux joueurs de profiter de plusieurs jeux Valve, par exemple. Et le problème est visiblement le même sous GNU/Linux, Valve fait de la résistance. *Half-Life 2* ne fonctionne plus sur les Mac récents depuis quelques années. Image Valve. Dans le monde libre, l'abandon du x86 32 bits est moins abrupt que chez Apple. Le noyau 6.15 (l'actuel) est le premier qui ne prend plus en charge les antiques 486 (contemporains des 68040 de Motorola) et une partie des distributions modernes existe encore dans une variante 32 bits, plus de 20 ans après l'arrivée des premiers CPU x86 64 bits. Le mouvement en cours est tout de même visiblement de supprimer la prise en charge du code 32 bits dans les distributions populaires, ce qui simplifierait la distribution des logiciels. Mais la proposition d'effectuer ce changement dans Fedora 44 a amené une levée de boucliers, à cause de Steam. En effet, le lanceur de Valve contient encore du code 32 bits et certains outils qui permettent de lancer des jeux Windows sous GNU/Linux sont dans le même cas. Même s'il existe des solutions pour exécuter des programmes 32 bits sur un système 64 bits, elles ne sont visiblement pas assez avancées pour que les joueurs s'en contentent. Et dans le monde libre, les utilisateurs ont plus de poids que chez Apple : Canonical avait abandonné l'idée de supprimer entièrement le 32 bits d'Ubuntu avec la version 19.10 suite aux protestations des joueurs et à la réponse de Valve, qui comptait tout simplement ne plus recommander Ubuntu. Même actuellement, Steam est d'ailleurs toujours un problème sur les Mac : c'est un des rares logiciels qui n'est pas compilé pour les puces Apple Silicon, cinq ans après l'arrivée des premiers Mac ARM (même s'il existe une version bêta). Enfin, dans le monde Windows, le problème n'en est pas un : si Microsoft a abandonné la version purement 32 bits de Windows avec Windows 11, les applications 32 bits sont parfaitement prises en charge sur les systèmes 64 bits, et ça ne devrait pas changer à cour terme, tant l'inertie est forte chez les utilisateurs de Windows.
