actually my first time reading one of r.f. kuang's books (although ive only ever heard good things abt her other works!!) and while this one has def had mixed reviews, i truly...truly am glad i read it. seeing someone i resonated with hit her lowest fucking lows but still be able to claw her way out

everyone really got like...what they deserved. it wasn't a neat and tidy ending by any means for the world as a whole but it was so satisfying for the characters. this was a very character driven story and i think some people...may not like that. but it was so beautiful and thoughtful... this was

the fmc (alice). idk if it was intentional for her to have bpd but she was very bpd-coded to me and like...honestly letting a mc be shitty and having to face the consequences for their actions was like. really good.

"katabasis" is a journey to hell a la dante's inferno, orpheus and eurydice. you get it. and this WAS. it truly, genuinely WAS a katabasis. the book successfully did what it set out to do so i have no notes on that.
