Hopefully this means eventually I'll be able to play Astro Bot without having to buy a PS5

The Road To El Dorado

This movie feels like a relic of a time gone by. I miss when Dreamworks did 2D animation. The movie itself alright. The history is very bad, but I mostly expected that going in. A few jokes made me chuckle, more didn't. Fairly nice looking, but no Prince of Egypt. 6/10

John Wick 3: Parabellum

The pacing is weird and the plot is nonsense, but it's hard to care when the movie looks this good. The shots in the desert especially are stunning. I like that the criminal underworld runs on old timey bureaucracy for some reason. Fight scenes in museums always rule. 8/10

Dead Dead Demons DeDeDeDeDestruction

This is one I can tell I'll be thinking about for a while. Possibly the best media I've seen at evoking the vibe of feeling like you're waiting for an inevitable apocalypse but still trying to plan your future and live your life. Beautifully animated. High 9/10

Konosuba s3

It's alright. At the beginning I was thinking maybe I've just grown out of this, but I was enjoying myself a lot more by the end of the season. At it's best when the four main characters are just put in a room and allowed to play off of each other. Dub was great. High 6, low 7/10

Jentry Chau Vs The Underworld (rewatch)

One of my favorites of last year, rewatched it with some friends. Wears its influences on its sleeve but still makes something wholly its own. Great characters, animation, and soundtrack. Lots for a mythology nerd like me to appreciate. Please season 2! 9/10

Ace Attorney (the live action movie one)

Not very good, but very fun. Somehow captures the vibe of the games very well and simultaneously not at all. Pacing was nonsense, very hard to follow if you don't already know the story. Best part was the hologram machine. 5/10 quality, 8/10 enjoyability.

Sonny Boy

Binged through this pretty quick cause I needed to know what the heck was going on. I'm still not sure entirely. Beautiful and strange. One of the most visually creative anime of recent years, evocative of Yuasa and Kon and even Miyazaki. Rajdhani is the best character, I love him. 9/10

A Sign Of Affection

Super cute. Both leads are compelling individually and have great chemistry together. A fun cast of side characters. It's cool to learn more about JSL and the deaf community in modern Japan. Vibes are great, despite it not being a focus there's a good sense of place. 8/10

Honestly not sure. Very strange. Uncomfortable, especially in the first half hour, but clearly intentionally so. Well acted and directed. Felt a little confused in its messaging at times? I'll probably be thinking about it for a while, which counts for something. 7/10, I think? Might change later.

The Sympathizer (show)

I think the book's too well suited to its medium for an adaptation to ever feel perfect. I have some quibbles with plot changes, but they're relatively minor. Makes some bold stylistic choices that mostly pay off. Hoa Xuande is excellent as The Captain. 8/10 (book is 10/10)

Donut County

A cute entry in the sadly rare Katamari-like genre. Was impressed that each level had a little twist that changed up the core mechanics. Maybe wish it was a little longer, but the short runtime also meant it never stopped being fresh and fun. Writing & aesthetics were charming. 8/10

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Played most of this last year but I'm putting things here when I finish them. Have a lot more thoughts on this one than I can fit here, might give it its own thread later if I feel like it. Overall a very good time with some big flaws. 8/10

Rush Hour

Basically exactly what I expected it to be. The plot may as well not exist, it's just a vehicle for the fights and set pieces and that's all it tries to be. Luckily those fights and set pieces are dynamic, exciting, and fun. Good bloopers at the end, movies should bring those back. 7/10

I'm fond of this one but remember almost nothing of the actual gameplay to be honest. Top notch banter though, very cute. Agree on the soundtrack.

Into The Inferno

Volcanoes sure are neat. And terrifying. Liked how it explored what they mean to people on a larger scale with their place in history and culture and on a smaller scale to specific individuals. The bit filmed in North Korea was definitely the most unique and interesting part. 8/10

They Cloned Tyrone

Fun and pulpy scifi-ish mystery. Beginning was a bit slow and pacing throughout was a little weird. Social commentary was not subtle and it didn't need to be, it works. Good to see more of John Boyega's range in stuff that isn't Star Wars. 7/10

The aesthetics are definitely a strong suit, the part with the Endurance flying past Saturn into the wormhole was stunning. The big waves on big wave planet inspired suitable awe and terror. I liked some of the more understated shots of the farmhouse too, and how those tied in to the ending.

Interstellar

Finally got around to it. I liked it, but not as much as I hoped I would. Plays with fun concepts and has some excellent moments. The setting and many of the characters felt a bit underbaked, especially egregious with how long it is. Amazing visuals & sound. Space is pretty cool. 7/10

Cunk on Life

It's more Cunk, Cunk is great. A couple jokes didn't land but almost all of them did. The interviews with experts are, as always, the best part. I have no idea how she's able to keep such a straight face. Has the new best way to read Nietzsche. 9/10

Undead Unluck (anime, s1)

Pretty fun! Characters are likeable, powers are creative, fights are well choreographed and worldbuilding is intriguingly strange. Some eyeroll-worthy fanservice bits towards the beginning, but mostly dropped those later. A few too many flashbacks and recaps. 8/10
