Spoke on a panel last week about cultural alignment for low-resource languages; with some brilliant colleagues and sharp moderation by Simon Chesterman.

The discussion reminded me how much anthropology still has to offer AI.

Goodbye, Melbourne 👋🏻
November 29, 2025 at 6:04 AM
On a panel in Melbourne today discussing #AI cultural alignment and how to best approach it.

Happy to see so many folks in the audience. Not just for my own ego, but because this is an important question for AI #justice moving forward.

Will post a more detailed update (and better pic) soon!

The EU backing down in the AI Act is of course instrumentally bad inasmuch as removing safeguards (even imperfect ones) increases risk of harm.

But it is also tantamount to resigning some of the EU's sovereignty, that is, its right to enact and enforce its own laws.

What a mess.

Had the pleasure of visiting #Laos and host a workshop with their government and stakeholders.

Laos has a very ambitious yet self-aware agenda for how to use & govern #AI 's emergent capabilities to support their society and economy.

We will be writing a report on this shortly. Eyes peeled!

Travelling to the UK and I just had to verify my age to fully use Bluesky. Okay, weird, yes.

But when I chose to verify my age through age estimation from a photo, I think I'm most upset by not seeing the result. I want to know how old the app thinks I look, dammit!

För mig var du en ljusgestalt
i nattens tid upprunnen,
vid morgonen försvunnen.
Jag minns dig som en stjärna;
en saga; en sång.

Whilst us millennials have been blamed for killing all sorts of products and services, I would like to throw some flak at Zoomers for killing the V-neck t-shirt.

What the hell people?! This is a crime that is not receiving enough attention!

Folks have been going on for years that we don't know how this works & that this is a problem.

What's interesting here isn't what he's admitting, it's that he's admitting it.

I suspect his reasons for admitting this are more cynical than just genuine care.

This is a thread I didn't know I needed. 👀
But also lumping early iron age archers and slingers together like this is itself a bad mistake, given that - and we'll come back to this - the way that the best armies fight in this period in the Levant and broader Middle East is shield-bearers paired with archers or javelin troops. 4/

Got to record my first podcast yesterday. Giving my thoughts on AI governance and where tech might take us. That was fun!

So this whole map-generation thingy has been making the rounds.

Whilst this thing is hilariously bad in places (Cccchiccp should be Czechia's new name tbh), the Swede in me approves of Denmark basically being Atlantis'd.

Will miss Estonia though.

Spoken like someone who is equally as delusional about Britain as lacking even the most basic knowledge of Singapore.
Sir Keir Starmer must harness Britain’s post-Brexit freedoms to transform the country into “Singapore-on-Thames” in the wake of a global trade war launched by President Trump, Jeremy Hunt has said

Reading how folks in Europe react to the tariffs: "oh no so much worse than we thought!".

Trump has been threatening us (and others) since before he got into office.

Can we stop being surprised when he does things he has threatened to do for ages?

Joined an experiment run by Sweden's Defence Research Institute, FOI, on collective intelligence called Glimt.

Really interesting idea, and glad to see it being trialed on this level, and I hope for positive results!

Could be an amazing tool for policy and decision makers!
