Gunblades came before guns. They're named that because it's a shortened form of "Gunnhildr's Blades". The Allagan empire created firearms, which the hrothgar likened to "gunblades without a blade".

Correction: It was actually the soldiers' navigation code, not their fighting. But leading a pack of proto-Barneys into battle resulted in the security team's existence.
