I mean, that scenario was the plot of Election in the late 90s. Which is maybe why some of us thought it would burn out like it did for us? (Or maybe it never burned out and the younger generation brought us back to this ethos?)

I haven't yet met a person who hasn't immediately reacted to this story in disbelief. Rekeya kept her composure in the worst of conditions.

Whaaaaattttt???? I was waiting for the semis to go somewhere with volleyball on, because I couldn't believe Nebraska would be in play this round.

3) immigrants and students shouldn't be worried about being detained. But an ice agent in a situation WHERE THE PEOPLE IN THE CAR WERE DEFERRING TO THE POLICE wants us to sympathize with his detainment.

Also. There are multiple accounts of the intelligence we used to win WWII that indicate that we won because we knew how to research, in libraries and archives. That research, and our willingness to accept immigrants with science skills, beat out Germany's more advanced war technology.

The Defense Minister pretending to be a flighty girl boss while being much, much more in-tune then her predecessor gets my full attention every time.

So it's good news not in the "we need better billionaires" way, but in the way that it sets an example for a different way of conceptualizing our world in the future.

2) it gives perspective on just how much money is at the top, that she can personally give this much away and not have it affect her life in any way. This is a story I can tell about how even a 50% tax rate might not effect a person's savings in any substantial way.

I get what you are saying, but I think there is some nuance:

1) all government money and grants have extensive applications, measurement, and evaluation. And while that's sometimes necessary seeing in real time the results of q huge cash influx without overhead has been instructive.

Oh. Huh. I have seen other methodologies to test similar concepts. Like when asking for help writing a paper, the way that students get feedback and move forward is very linear when it's from a person, even through chat. It is not linear when asking an LLM.

Duffy went to the college I graduated from before I was there. This isn't the first time I've been glad that both Dr. Flodstrom and Dr. Costello didn't live to see him embarrass them like this.

The massive media companies are already ahead of you on this one: they won't sell us subscriptions that we can share with everyone (The Atlantic) or charge us more than 10 times what a consumer pays (NYT) in an era where our budgets are not keeping up with inflation.
December 8, 2025 at 9:22 PM
But nearly every country 1) has reduced rates for things they consider necessities and 2) includes the sales tax in the cost advertised to the consumer.

All of what everyone is saying about how Somalis have been as Minnesotan as any of us-- but also, as usual the facts on this are wrong. Most of this population came here in the late 90s and earlier 2000s. Because of Lutheran Social Services refugee outreach.

One of his first times in Minnesota, he was in Duluth. He asked which ocean he was seeing.

I'm from SE Minnesota. My German grandpa was from Nebraska, or he probably wouldn't have still spoken German. We burned crosses in this part of the country in the 1920s because we were mad about Catholics moving in and ruining our culture.
December 2, 2025 at 5:58 PM
My grandfather still spoke German in a time when they burned all the German language books. Because those Germans weren't going to assimilate. I don't have celebrity lore: my family has just been teachers on both sides for generations.

He also refused to admit he set the bomb or was even a member of the IRA, despite mountains of evidence that he was in fact its leader.

Also, these kinds of things are so kind in a northern city, where often the only part of you that is cold is the part holding onto something.

It's so quiet in the street, too. You get a whole different neighborhood feeling in the snow.
