Oddly they don't do lamp checking here. The signal system has no visibility to burnt out lamps unlike the US. I'm not sure what the rules are if the driver of a non-CBTC equipped encounters a dark signal. CBTC equipped trains have an onboard display of movement authority, and use ATO in the tunnel.

Town Hall station was as beautiful as the previews made it out to be. I still have a hard time accepting a dark signal as "proceed on in-cab indications" though the rationale makes sense.

Anticipation and cheering as the first train takes the diverging movement through the switch at South Kensington into the Metro Tunnel.

Was a great ride, the train was packed!

It’s *packed* lol

I feel you. I’m the “relay guy” at work and we are trying to emulate all the functions of safety critical relays in a microprocessor based platform. The team is perpetually surprised about what you can accomplish with just the right number of turns of a specific gauge wire.

We call that “significant section loss in a fracture critical structural member”

Miss you, and wishing you all the best.

Maybe consider the Pilot dry erase product line?

Not affiliated with jetpens but have bought from them before and had a good experience.

Also consider wet erase markers if you don’t do a lot of erasing on the spot, and you want to avoid the sticky dry erase “dust”

Yeah I really didn’t have a need for a new phone…but the orange… It’s really great.

Yup, a clean warm moist compress applied 3-4 times a day for 10 mins can help bring it to a head and drain naturally. See a doctor if it doesn’t get better, antibiotics might be required.

Wonder if you could have an auger that moves the balls in and out of the tube. I’d worry about jams, but that’s just my lack of experience with materials handling.
September 24, 2025 at 4:18 AM
Yeah I understand, I like the bead chain in a tube idea you mentioned quite a bit.

I’m just saying these are 1980s tech… *ducks* skip to 2:50 for a visual demo

There is something in me that wants a laser diode to fire down the back side of the casing hitting a stationary mirror at the bottom which directs the beam to a mirror in the front on a galvanometer, the galvo aims the beam up and down the scale.
Much trigonometry in the control…

Just a couple thoughts:

A spool of red plastic filament in a clear tube, the motor spools out/reels in the filament to adjust the height.

A belt on two pulleys, one at the top and bottom. The outside of the belt is painted partly red the other white.
