Jayce follows him with his eyes like a sap, lips half-parted, as if he has anything to say; as if he doesn’t, as always, have too much to say, so much it can never leave his mouth. Viktor takes the empty spot across the table three seats away, hanging his cane over the back of the chair. The pang of tenderness Jayce feels then, seeing that cane again. Some part of him thought he never would. The gold of Viktor’s eyes catching his for a moment, then flicking away. His pale fingers curling around the stem of the drink. It’s gone very fast—the moment, the drink.

“You came,” Viktor says, smiling up at him. He’s sheltered in a dark booth in the corner, toying with his glass. “You say that like you’re surprised,” Jayce says, sliding in next to him. “Shouldn’t I be?” he asks. “I can’t exactly say our parlay on Friday was a success.” He’s wearing a white collared shirt, the first few buttons undone, and hair is damp, like he woke up at five, showered, and got on the F. There’s something so familiar about it all, so comforting; Jayce has the stupid impulse to shove his face into the crook of Viktor’s neck, breathe in the smell of his cologne. “Like hostile governments,” he says instead. Viktor smiles at him. “Eh, a little.” He pats the pile of napkins on the table. “Tell me what you’re thinking.” “Poor attempt at diplomacy,” Jayce says. “You’re not gonna buy me a drink?” Viktor’s smile gets bigger, brighter. “Anything you like,” he says. “This is practically Yalta. Just add it to my tab.”

Inevitable, in the end. They get very drunk, stumble back to Viktor’s apartment, where Jayce unbuttons his pea coat and collapses on the couch, his face too hot. “I forgot how red you get when you’re drunk,” Viktor says, giggling. I didn’t forget a single thing about you, Jayce doesn’t say. The apartment too, the studio with its fold-out couch, its hook-up washer taking up most of the tiny kitchen, its exquisitely overworked radiator where Viktor used to hang his laundry until it faintly smoked. “I know you don’t have an ounce of self-preservation,” Jayce said once, peeling off a few socks, “but won’t you think of the innocents in the building?” “I know what I’m doing,” Viktor said idly. “Some of us didn’t grow up in Jersey.” “I’m from the Heights!” “Your mother is from the Heights,” Viktor said. “That is entirely different.”

They were partners in all the ways that mattered. Collaborators, Mel would introduce them at parties, and Jayce would nudge Viktor’s shoulder lightly, murmuring co-conspirators. It always felt like they were getting away with something, a trick they were pulling on everyone else, to be allowed to make what they loved with the person they loved most in the world. It felt like mischief, sitting curled around a notebook at three or four in the morning, marking out hasty staffs while Viktor told him what would happen next, hour after hour spinning out stories. It was magic to him, what Viktor could do. It felt like sitting in the presence of magic. And then, like most magic tricks, it ended. In the background, Jayce playing piano while Viktor sings with him. They’re next to a window with a blue moon shining. In the foreground, both of them looking tired, Jayce with his long hair and scraggly beard. “Do you think we’re bad for each other?” he asks.

This was kind of a funny moment in the AMA. Alex’s lines are memorable and hers are… I’m not sure I understand what’s gripping about them.

Goes to show that more than one kind of writer is required to make a script work, plotting/structure vs great quotes etc.

There is one scene with Sevika that we wrote that I was sad to lose: after Jinx burned down the Last Drop she ran into Sevika - with the flames of the bar lapping up behind her in the background - and Sevika tried to talk her down and comfort her about Isha, but Jinx confessed to Sevika that she was the one who killed Silco. She threw that in Sevika’s face to push her away because she didn’t want anyone to try and change her mind anymore. And there was also a version WAY BACK in the day, in a bygone 201, where the Chembarons tried to assassinate Jinx at Silco’s funeral, and Sevika saved her life. And then they hashed out Jinx killing Silco in that first episode. Long-live the many, many iterations of Arcane!

For the first time since this ill-advised escape began—breaking into Heimerdinger’s office, stealing contraband materials, forging his signature on a prisoner-release form—Viktor considers that he may actually be in danger. It’s the dullness in the man’s yellow eyes, and his bloody fingernails, and the white marks trailing up and down his arms. More than anything, perhaps, it’s his unnatural stillness. He looks nothing like the picture tucked in his file. He looks nothing like a person at all. “Jayce Talis?” he asks finally. Something twitches in the man’s jaw. “Yeah,” he says. “I was.”
