From my novel Blackbird –
In gentler tones, "I spoke of your coming." This was not an explanation of any kind; the story of the whole world was in Vacan's words. She may as well have told us that a sunrise was scheduled for the next dawn. "It was not inevitable until so I spoke it. I bent My voice to this so that you would here arrive." Could She do that? Did She have a choice about what future She spoke into being? I was struggling with the revelation, and I knew that Jinpa at my side was equally troubled. "It cost Me a great deal to bring this about," mentioned the Goddess, this time in tones almost like those of a human. "But it is no matter. Now you look upon My Sister." It was, once again, simply a statement of a fact that had already become true. We were looking at Her before we knew any better. The other woman looked drained, broken. Her grey-streaked hair had come loose from its knot, and so deep was her exhaustion that her eyes were neither closed nor open, but sagging in-between. Her chest barely rose and fell. She wore a fiery crown of stars and Her eyes were full of darkness. She wielded a net and a many-jointed spear; Her black sari was bordered in aurora-green and the red of dawn. She was Nitya, the limitless night, and She was dying. "We are the eldest of the gods, Nitya and I," Vacan the old woman observed. She had caused the Goddess-voice to recede. "I think our time in this world is ending."

CHAPTER ONE - IN WHICH I PUT MY FOOT IN MY MOUTH AGAIN Every day I cut and polish glass. I check my calculations and I update my charts and logs. I take papers out. I put them back. I wash ink from my fingertips. Every night I read the messages Nitya hung in the stars. Every night I measure and predict and foretell. Every day I put on my earrings and a sleeveless scholar's jacket, my brightest smile and a pair of wide, listening eyes, and I go to speak with the locals. I buy flaky butter rotis and fresh vegetables. I compliment the curry-paste man on the quality of his mixtures. I consult with people on the weather, I sell them fortunes or divine answers to their questions. I buy cotton and deerhide and resin-rich branches of pine. Every night, I used to curse the decision that brought me here, until, one day, trouble came to my doorstep.
