Two new collages. I recently acquired a whole lot of new collage ephemera and was finally feeling inspired yesterday for the first time in many months.

Visual art has been my full time job for 6 years, and burnout has made art-related hobbies feel like work. So I am trying to reconnect with other hobbies (esp. ones that don’t involve screens, please). I've been feeling the pull to noodle around again on a piano, so yesterday I got myself a gift. 🩵

This reminds me of a much less sophisticated one that I decorated more than a decade ago. When life gives a medical illustrator a broken cookie...make it bleed, I guess.

Black Dog Books & Records invited me to design and illustrate a bookmark for their 1-year anniversary last month. I loved this project! More info/context in the image alt text. Side note, it's surprisingly difficult to find reference images for book spines!

A photo of my hand holding up two of the bookmark I designed for Black Dog Books & Records in Grand Rapids, MI (showing the front and back). In the illustration both sides of the bookmark are framed within a bookshelf, where little characters are positioned in the shelves surrounded by books and other cozy props. The artwork is mostly a purple and orange color scheme, with simple character designs. More project info: I was given free rein to do whatever I wanted for this project, and from the start I imagined tiny characters inside of a bookshelf, surrounded by larger-than-life books. All of the books included in the artwork (aside from the ones containing the shop information) are real book spines--many of them banned or challenged books, a few others I chose, a few requested by the store owner, and some other random titles shouted out by friends as I was finishing the project.
