I ran into someone from New York City and they asked me where I was from. And they actually said, “Oh, Milwaukee, do you know X?” I realized they thought Milwaukee was a tiny primitive village of 100 people. But the fact was, I did know her. X was the first real girl I ever danced with.

Last night I was Brutalized. Yes, I went to see The Brutalist. It was so long! How long was it? It was so long that when I walked out I spoke fluent Hungarian. It was so long that when I walked out my phone had a Y3K problem. That’s how long.

Trump said he’d be a dictator on day one. He was a dictator on days 2, 3, 4 and 5, too, and purging 17 inspector generals at night isn’t what democracy loving presidents do. I see a pattern developing that just might extend beyond a week.

2024 was a really good movie year for movies for me, maybe the best in a decade. And the Oscar nomination list is basically my list, too. I haven’t seen The Brutalist yet, though.

When and if people like Mariann Edgar Budde are actually deported or arrested or start falling off balconies, then I’ll know America is an autocracy. Budde spoke truth to power and so far is still standing and free. That means the bones of America are still good.

The bad news for bookselling is that the wonderful Books Inc. has filed for bankruptcy and is closing one of its stores, the one in Berkeley. The good news for me is that the manager of the Berkeley store listed its top ten all-time bestsellers and The Mathematician’s Shiva is on that list.
