I have a small issue with Michael Heseltine's otherwise great description of Farage. If he really looked like a farmer, he would be wearing a boiler suit and covered in cow shit. What he actually looks like is someone who wants to look like a farmer.

An ale from Yorkshire called "Swale Trail Pale", explicitly referencing Keld and Grinton, of Swaledale Corpse Path fame (stuartdunn.blog/2023/07/14/t...). I think the weekend has come early.

Roman Corbridge (Coria), Northumberland. The granary building on the left of the picture remained at the same level for 200 years, but the Stanegate road in the centre/right of the picture rose by nearly 2m as a result of renovation and resurfacing. I love seeing how mobility changes landscapes.

Recently back from two very inspiring days in Rome discussing "Beyond Materiality" at the Swedish Institute. We questioned how we can understand the senses, reception and affordances of the past with and beyond material culture. And yes, my paper was on corpse roads 😀.

The Sunday Express seems to be flying a hot air balloon over my village. Hot air, gusts of inflammatory behavior, looking like they're going to land on the M4 motorway... yup.

Many years ago I had a brief stint as a door to door salesman, which I was totally useless at. I do however remember being told then that in a grift, you should always end everything you say with an empathetic open question.

Enjoying the @folkloresociety.bsky.social online conference on Folklore and the Digital, although the cat has taken a sudden voracious interest in the reading materials.

If it came to it, I am not sure that "sorry for the inconvenience" would feel quite sufficient. Serious point: far too many public spaces and organisations (including mine) are not doing enough to provide access to AED machines.

Been checking out the OS map of my new area. Sites like the atomic weapons lab at Burghfield used to be blanked out, now with Google Earth etc they don't bother any more.
