James reminds us in today's First Reading that everything is good has its source in God. Every time we do something that is good, let us give thanks to God; every time we acknowledge good in another person, thing or circumstance, let us give thanks to God, the author of all good.

Make no mistake about this, my dear brothers: it is all that is good, everything that is perfect, which is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow of a change. (James 1:17)

We witness Jesus being asked to give a sign on several occasions in the Gospels. Of course, the healings of Jesus and his words are signs of who he is, but many who ask perhaps want greater signs. May we never fail to recognise signs of God's presence in our lives each day.

The Pharisees...demanded of Jesus a sign from heaven, to test him. And with a sigh that came straight from the heart he said, ‘Why does this generation demand a sign? I tell you solemnly, no sign shall be given to this generation.’ (Mark 8:11-12)

As we draw nearer to Lent, we hear Jesus call us to a deeper and more profound relationship with him and with our brothers and sisters. Christianity is about intentional living of the Gospel, not simply ticking boxes. This is where true happiness and fulfilment lies.

Jesus said to his disciples: 'For I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.' (Matthew 5:20)

We are all familiar with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, but we might sometimes forget what preceded it: pity. Jesus did not do this miracle to be spectacular but because of his loving care and concern for those in need. This is still the case today.

A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. (Mark 8:1-2)

Jesus makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak. We can understand this in terms of the miracles that Jesus effected but also in another way: when we embrace fully the mission of Jesus we will see and hear things in a new and enlightened way and seek to make it known to others.

And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’ (Mark 7:36-37)

Today's Gospel is a wonderful example of Jesus engaging in a playful tête-à-tête with a woman. It is shown that the Good News of salvation is for all people who embrace Christ and his mission, not only a select group. The question for we Christians is, can we accept this truth?

Jesus said to the Syrophoenician woman, ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She said: ‘Ah yes, sir,’ she replied ‘but the house-dogs under the table can eat the children’s scraps.’ (Mark 7:27-28)

Jesus makes it clear in today's Gospel that what we eat is usually of no significance in terms of sin, but what we do and say can be sinful. The part of the body we sin with the most is our mouth - poorly chosen and hastily spoken words can cause all sorts of serious damage!

Jesus called the people to him and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to this.’ (Mark 7:14-16)

Jesus makes the point in today's Gospel that human tradition can sometimes be used to downplay the importance of God's law. Human traditions may be good and useful, but they should never be given precedence over what is asked of us by God.

So these Pharisees and scribes asked Jesus, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ (Mark 7:5)

We hear in today's Gospel that many people came to Jesus begging to touch just the fringe of his cloak to be healed. We have the opportunity to embrace Jesus more fully in so many ways. If we are choosing not to take these opportunities, we must ask ourselves what we fear?
February 8, 2026 at 9:07 PM
And wherever Jesus went, to village, or town, or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched him were cured. (Mark 6:56)

As Christians, we are called to be salt to the earth, preserving what is good in society as well as adding something piquant to the world around us to bring it a greater vibrancy and help reveal the presence of our glorious God to all whom we encounter.
February 7, 2026 at 8:35 PM
Jesus said to his disciples: 'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.' (Matthew 5:13)
