Our beloved 170 year old oak tree and others are at threat of felling in a subsidence claim. Aviva have pushed our council into this, while experts state underpinning would be better.

We thought we should recap our story for new followers:
1. Old King George is a 170-year-old oak in Wivenhoe, Essex which alongside a mature horse chestnut, was due to be felled following pressure linked to a subsidence claim by Aviva in early 2025. So far, they survive thanks to a community effort.

Our fundraiser has now bust the £6000 mark. That's around double the amount raised this time last week. We are raising funds to save 'Old King George' our 170 year old oak tree by seeking to stop our town council and Aviva from felling it. Please give if you can. www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...

Waiting to see what, if anything, happens regarding the resurfacing works in the car park around Old King George today. Nothing yet. We have highlighted concerns to the council about the potential for works in the root protection area to harm the trees, so we will keep an eye on works as they occur.

A reminder of this weekend's major news - reporting that the family who own one of the two properties involved in claims of movement being handled by Aviva/Innovation Group and Wivenhoe Town Council don't actually want the trees to go either! They seek underpinning

Tomorrow resurfacing works will start in the vicinity of Old King George. We have given lots of information to Wivenhoe Town Council regarding our concerns for potential harm to the trees while the injunction is in place, over to them to see if they can follow the relevant British standards!

That's so kind. Thanks very much for flagging our campaign which is fighting on despite taking on the might of Aviva who want the trees gone. We are not daunted and hope to prevail!

Thank you tree friends 😊 much appreciated support. Please do help us if you can, by sharing our story and if you are able to, by contributing to the legal action funding pot www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi... to help stand up for trees in a system of insurers prioritising profits over nature

In our opinion, if a mature tree has been at a location longer than the buildings around it, then it should have priority for existing over the buildings. Creative solutions to allow the oak to exist rather than legal bills would have been better explored in Wivenhoe UK. @stopthechop.bsky.social

We already knew forests were heavy lifters in reducing climate pollution. New research reveals the tiny microbes in tree bark can also “eat” climate gases.

Today the front page of the Gazette leads with the story from one of the families affected by the ongoing movement issues near our trees, who say they 'don't want to see the trees chopped' and who, like us, think underpinning will be the best solution for them long term and avoid the need to fell.

Wow today has been amazing, we have now reached £4,055 and counting. We are so grateful to each and every one of you for donations of any size, it's all making a difference together. Can we now reach the £5,000 mark?
Thanks for all the support of our CrowdJustice page, we are fast approaching the 1/3 mark to our £10,000 minimum target! Can you help us nudge past this and start making progress towards the halfway point? www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...

A snowy scene, but this morning our trees and the wider car park were fully fenced off. The morning saw people enjoying a last walk through, with footprints and a snow angel left behind. Injunction notices placed by a concerned member of the public were again removed from the fencing by the council.

We are curious to see what the council will do in coming days. Previously the car park old King George is (unfortunately) sited in was set for closure as of midnight tonight. With an injunction in place we cannot see why a closure would still continue. Felling works were due to commence this week.

Doing Dry January? 🍻
If you’re skipping even just a £6 pint each week, that’s £24 saved this month. (Or £48 or £72 if you’d usually have one or two more!) Would you consider donating some of that to help fund the legal fight to protect Old King George?
