Less people is a factual statement about one way to achieve sustainability. Many ways to accomplish that. Womens' rights. Access to family planning. Education. All result in lower birth rates without government coercion.

I don't mean individual action on consumption. The economic system requires perpetual growth in a finite system. We have to ditch that system. The other European economic systems also focus on extraction and growth. They differ a little on distribution of the spoils. But they are the same dead end.
