This gave me an intrusive thought which I foolishly searched for and found something horrible…
It looks like a mistake as their descriptions make no mention of any Bluetooth features. In our current a timeline though, I couldn't just automatically assume it was incorrect.

There is something very weird going on with this story beyond the usual passive voice over who did the actual shooting.
The article you linked completely skips over these pretty important details with the phrase "rushed to a local hospital".

As a kid I had a book with lots of cool pictures from the movie before I saw it. Maybe that's why that really unexpectedly dark and confusing opening was so memorable.

So the hole got fixed but where did all that water go?
They dug their way into this mess and they also dug their way out.
The water was drained into a much larger, deeper tunnel system, that is their currently ongoing wild infrastructure project, the massive Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP) 14/

Lots of buildings were closed off from the tunnels long before this but many of their obstructions weren't watertight.
That morning nobody knew where all this water was coming from but eventually fish spotted in the Merchandise Mart basement suggested the source was the river and likely nearby. 12/

Erosion is a slow process but bureaucracy can be even slower and after 6 months, on April 13th 1992, nature won this particular race. A direct path for water from the river to enter the tunnel opened up.
Once water was flowing freely more could then flow at increasingly faster rates. 10/

A cable TV tech happened to be inspecting a cable running through the same tunnel shortly after and alerted the city.
Despite the pilings now being visible from the tunnel, water was barely leaking through so the city began to slowly figure out how to patch up a tunnel without a clear owner. 9/

The Chicago Tunnel Company went bankrupt in 1956 and over the subsequent decades the network and its tunnels were abandoned leaving ownership (and maintenance) ambiguous.
Which brings us back to 1991 and the workers now driving new pilings into the riverbed next to the Kinzie Street bridge. 7/

By 1910 the CTC network had 60 miles of tunnels and connected many buildings with a supply of coal, goods, mail and even air.
Wait, air?
Any attached buildings could pay to draw in the 55℉ (13℃) air from the tunnels for cooling in the summer or as warmer fresh air for heating in the winter. 6/

What probably does qualify as a wild infrastructure projects is the underground rail network that the Chicago Tunnel Company started operating in 1906.
The tunnels followed the streets of Chicago running at least 22.5 feet (6.86 m) below.
They later inspired London's Post Office Railway. 5/

Wood left in water doesn't stay in great condition and in 1991 the pilings around the Kinzie Street bridge needed replacing.
The Great Lakes Dock and Dredge company got the job but concerns with damaging the Bridge Tender's House lead to them driving the new pilings a few feet further southeast. 3/

In order to protect Kinzie Street bridge's more sensitive bits from floating things that may get some silly ideas it is surrounded by a series of hexagonal groups of 32 wooden pilings
Groups of pilings like these are called dolphins 🐬(not relevant but it is a fun bit of trivia) 2/
