As a layperson interested in US law the challenge always has been trying to find out what a decision actually is, as opposed to what various journalists/professors want you to think it is. And that has gotten a lot worse the last 10 years.

I mean I wouldn't actually be surprised if a lot of people do think that. People are very susceptible to the allure of simple solutions. Even you and me. Though I would wager you (and I hope me) are more on guard against it in ourselves.
