From Vegetable Crime Reporting Service:

It was Mr Melkonian, in the kitchen, with the cleaver and chopping board who villainously, maliciously, and gluttony aforethought did lay into the produce aforementioned (cite value) for no reason other than to sate his palette and bamboozle his family.

A conversation I have heard more than once.

Hospital Consultant: We've just bought System A. Please set up.

IT: That's not compatible with: a - our hardware; b - our software; c - our legal obligations (eg GDPR, other NHS policies etc); or d - some combination of a b & c.

I suppose WW1 never loomed as large in the American experience. No Ypres or Verdun or Somme or Kut or Tannenberg or Isonzo or Gallipoli or Caucuses or Carpathians or (depressing list goes on).

No memorial crossed in nearly every village and town.

My grandparents used to live in Southend before they passed. It could admittedly do with some improvements.

The last annual review concluded the SS Richard Montgomery was perfectly safe!

And as a demonstration of exactly how safe it is it also banned aircraft from flying anywhere near it in case, y'know, the wreck spontaneously makes itself a lot safer in a manner incompatible with continued aviation...

I wonder, would the instrumentation of the day even been able to measure continental drift over several years? I know the theory itself is only 20thC

As a layperson interested in US law the challenge always has been trying to find out what a decision actually is, as opposed to what various journalists/professors want you to think it is. And that has gotten a lot worse the last 10 years.

Looking through that old thread I have to ask (from the alt text) have you yet eaten enough edibles to understand the reasons for Matsushima?

That is a very non trivial proportion of the population.

But then someone like that being ignorant of how much migration there has always been (to England esp.) is not a surprise.

So when I spoke to my daughter about this she misheard "vote" as "boat" and was mightily annoyed. Very serious expectation violation :)

Absolutely.

But maybe also that you are just a really cool person too :)

I am do glad Christopher Tolkien did not live long enough to see his father's work be so abused.

Admittedly that's a movie rather than book scene and quote, but still.

I mean I wouldn't actually be surprised if a lot of people do think that. People are very susceptible to the allure of simple solutions. Even you and me. Though I would wager you (and I hope me) are more on guard against it in ourselves.

Of course Dan Rather was happy to spread false news in aid of the politics he preferred, so perhaps not the best example.

There is nothing more humbling than hearing yourself say the words that so annoyed you when you were a child.

I've had a couple of reflective conversations with my mother the last 2-3 years, to her general amusement.
