You just cannot let yourself get that precious about landmark icons of popular culture. Not only did you lose that battle more than a century before you were even born, it's just a lot less fun to get uptight about the way things should be than to be interested in the way they are.

Tbh my real opinion is that film adaptations of Frankenstein are better when they get kind of weird with it.

and am currently writing my own extremely loose interpretation of the concepts involved. I don't think there's a single correct way of adapting Frankenstein and it is impossible to scandalize me. I thought it was very silly and a lot of fun.

I have seen every English-language movie featuring the Frankenstein monster from before ~1980 and the vast majority of the movies involving mad scientists in general. I have strong and somewhat esoteric opinions on Frankenstein adaptations

So there's a nude man, bound in chains, being whipped and threatened with an iron rod by his creator-father, mad with sexual jealousy - and then what, Mr. del Toro? 🤔
