Portrait of Victorian mourning for Jane P. Ard Wright (1877-1898). Her die-in-socket headstone was a prevalent style for the late 1800s. The bas-relief Lily of the Valley carving (also popular) symbolizes innocence, purity, & humility. To be memorialized as both dau. & wife suggests recent marriage.
The monument is a marble "die in socket" headstone, a very common style for the late 19th century. The stone has weathered significantly, showing the characteristic graying and biological growth (lichen and mold) that creates that high-contrast, darkened patina over the white marble. The base appears sturdy, supporting the upright tablet, which features a decorative, arched top (tympanum). The bas-relief carving at the top is a showstopper Lily of the Valley bouquet tied with a ribbon around the stems. Jane P. Daughter of J. T. & S. C. Ard Wife of W. W. Wright June 10, 1877 May 25, 1898 The dates tell the saddest part of the story. Jane was born in the Reconstruction Era South and died just two weeks before her 21st birthday. To be memorialized as both a daughter and a wife suggests she had likely married recently but passed before establishing a long matriarchy of her own. It’s a poignant snapshot of a life ending right on the cusp of adulthood. Peeking in the background, you can see the rusted iron fencing—likely a family plot enclosure—which frames the stone beautifully and adds to the atmospheric, historic cemetery aesthetic.

🪦 In the #Victorian Era (1837–1901), child mortality was heartbreakingly common. This Trunnell family gravestone, carved in bas‑relief with cherubs and flowers, memorializes three young siblings — symbols of innocence, grief, and the hope of heavenly peace. 👼

Here is the #headstone for two grandsons of the aforementioned James B. Nickelson -- James Ogilby and Henry Blake, sons of Ann O. and Rev. William C. Bass. Both little boys died in 1864.

Neoma McCamish d. at age 17, & Pulmonary Tuberculosis was the cause. Hers is at least the 4th case I've found while researching the names & dates on the stones at Maddux Cemetery in Tennessee's Harrison Bay State Park. TB was the # 1 cause of death in TN in 1923. By 1943, it had only fallen to # 3.

Often erroniously transcribed as M. Argent Davis, it's actually Mrs. Argent Davis (1830-1872). Might be a bit easier to see with colors inverted?
