Organic apple farmer and nursery owner in Sonoma County, CA. Check out http://littleappletreats.com for some good stuff! Here for ideas, mostly on climate and nature—plants and birds and rocks and things. Opinions my own.

A strain of Rome Beauty from our orchard called a Law Rome. The red skin stains the flesh when the nights get cold.

I have the perfect graphic for it. This image was used in the 1960’s in Sebastopol, CA. A little modification and it is good to go. All yours, Chuck.

I wear a size large, depending on the material, btw

Harvested and dried our Ashmead’s Kernel apples. A ripe Ashmead’s is an in-your-face apple: high acid, high sugar. An apple that solo drives a red convertible with the top down in the carpool lane during rush hour.

Heading towards the Golden Gate Bridge this is a common sight!

Just a quick phone pic, but I couldn’t resist. California skippers had all but disappeared from our garden a few years ago, but seem to be on the rebound. I’ll be zinnia soon, l’il buddy!

This Gravenstein apple tree across the road from my farm is about 90 years old and hasn’t been tended to in about 40 years, maybe more.

Pink Pearl apples. Still on the tart side, but ready to pick. Their interior color is the best I’ve seen thanks to a cooler-than-typical summer so far.

Sebastopol Gravenstein apples—I only manage to eat several a day when they’re in season.

An old walnut tree, a remnant of a long-gone orchard, just starting to leaf out. Seen on my walk this evening.

Just to add some extra detail, from Joan Morgan’s excellent book:

Ah ok. Perhaps my iphone is too geriatric to get it. It’s one of the older models.

I taped my phone to a telescoping pole and held it up to the entrance hole of the box—it’s still occupied but I only see one owl in there now. There’s definitely some extra drama happening this year.

Check out the top right corner.

The brute force attack description works as a metaphor for the entire Trump approach to governance.

First Gravenstein blossom cluster of the season, right on schedule. They are usually on full bloom on April 1 around here.

Yesterday I learned that the last original apple tree planted by Henderson Luelling at his Fruit Vale farm sometime between 1854 and 1859 survived until 2020. The remnant of the tree is still standing, and I happened to be driving past the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland today.

The adult elephant seals are leaving the beaches at Pt. Reyes National Seashore for their annual migration.

Take only memories, leave only footprints.

The normalizing language in this Washington Post article from this morning is a joke. Whittling is something done with a penknife, not grenades.

This is not my photo, but it’s a good representation of what Gravs look like when they have had good sunlight.

Not art, not writing, but this little gray fox has been coming around every night to cadge some bird food peanuts before I take away the tray, and she’s a cutie.

Flats of farm-grown lettuce starts from our nursery on their way to their forever home. Like in Toy Story, but with more salads.
