I was a trainee ringer with an old chap, Sandy Bankier, who spent a full day reading a novel while I monitored nets. At the end, he opened his wood burner, threw the book in and as he stabbed it with the poker, mumbled 'fucking crap'. 😄 Life is too short...👍

Any year list isn't about planning to get certain species 'first'. You need to get all species on the first available day or as near as you can...

I once gave up a patch, Warkworth Dunes, because it was just too busy. Early morning fine but by 10 the car park was heaving. I just found the whole thing depressing.

That seems difficult enough in sparsely populated areas of the Highlands, so there'll never be a self sustaining viable population in southern England.

Chaffinch locally extinct where I am. Probably four or five territories ten years ago. BBS on a 70 hectare farmland site with ancient woodland in Lancs last year, 1 singing make Chaffinch.

Take care, many common species aren't in it. Best book for micros is the Chris Manley 3rd edition guide.
