This kind of thing wouldn’t happen if we had a mayor who was actually willing to take on aldermanic prerogative. CDOT would be more than happy to ignore this sort of request if they had the necessary political cover. Having a proper South Loop ward would also help.
Ald. Dowell is forcing CDOT to tear out portions of already installed bike lane protection on 18th, including Chicago's first protected intersection.

It's frankly insulting the way this is described as maintaining "safety". It's an obvious trade off where making cars able to drive faster and more wreckless is traded for pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

The alderperson provided an update today: many of the already installed protections will be removed and planned protections will not be installed
the bike lane construction in question

it goes from 18th/Clark to 18th/Michigan, with a protected intersection at 18th/Wabash
