Pre-internet, the distribution channel ("NYT") was the same as the journalistic publication (NYT reporting was only available via the NYT subscription), but that link has been broken for 20 years and we've yet to find a good business model for the journalism side.

The specific outlet gives credibility to any individual article, so it matters, but people just don't think in terms of "I value this outlet on its own." They think in terms of "I care about topic X."

A big part of the problem is that people don't really subscribe to outlets any more; they subscribe to and think in terms of topics. Indeed, social media really organizes everything that way, via hashtags and trending lists.

Elon Musk has perfect data on every element of his company’s projects and he’s well over 100% wrong in his projections and promises. Even if data doesn’t lie, it’s pretty clear he doesn’t know enough to get it to tell the truth.

“We don’t actually understand how it works nor can we even trace its actions” has become, “we don’t care if it’s garbage. We need our product to succeed so we can be richer than we ever dreamt.”

updated? Heck, we don’t even have agreed upon language ourselves to address the distinctions (e.g. words like lesbian, gay, and bisexual all assume a binary … but binary what? Gender? Sex?)

I believe that integrating AI into society will hold back our development. Hope I’m wrong.

One big example of this is the biological, neurological, and psychological understanding of gender. The vast majority (probably 99.99%) of text that LLMs were trained on assume gender and biological sex are synonymous and binary. But science has found that they aren’t. So how would a model even get

Once content is crystallized in an LLM, it is pervasive. It’s one thing for specific scientific knowledge to get updated — there’s a process around science. But implicit cultural associations? Not at all. They get built in and aren’t questioned. Also it’s unclear how you would undo them.

I’m in favor of the unforgettable, emotionally evocative two-word slogans. They say current attention spans are just a few seconds, so we need to get the point across *fast*!

I disagree. The moment I heard “defund” my knee-jerk reaction was “no. I don’t want police defunded. They serve an important purpose. Redefined? Sure! They handle policing, but not domestic disputes, etc. “Defund” means to eliminate (that’s what DOGE is doing) and that isn’t what many of us want.

Of fonts I had purchased. Based on those two experiences I will not use Adobe Products as a general rule. They sometimes make good software but being on the other end of their blatant disregard and exploitation isn’t worth it.

They duplicated this act of customer contempt a decade later by discontinuing Type-on-Call activation servers and of course not providing a refund for the $$$$$ of fonts I had purchased. I wrote dozens of letters, ultimately up to the Board until finally someone cut me a CD-ROM with the hundreds

They provided no migration path to PageMaker or the fledgling InDesign and I ultimately had to pay to recreate a hundred documents.

Glad to hear they eventually did something with it. I loved it. My boss at my first job out of business school was one of the Frame founders. For the first several years ADOBE added few features but changed the file version number so you had to pay $150 for the new version.

I doubt it’s a commentary on Bluesky’s users. There’s no algorithm, so it’s harder to grow a large following here without the positive feedback loops. People who are pundits for a living need that feedback loop.

Isn’t that the grand neoliberal promise? That we should all save for retirement through large scale gambling in a system that only a handful of people have ever been able to consistently do well in? Sounds sensible.

The media has failed us and we no longer have third spaces where bulletin boards and word of mouth can spread the word.
