The rest of the mangled passage: "In terms of Park and League of Justice ERA, Joss was fourth, although after Three Finger Brown, who was number one, there are six pitchers in a bunch. Ed Walsh, Matheson, then Joss, Noodles Han, who we don't remember quite as well, and Ed Rolbach."

He was born/lived/died there and after he left the majors did some part-time work as a battlefield tour guide (before checking out much too young). "Gettysburg Eddie" was so much part of his baseball ID that they put it on his HOF plaque, and I'm incapable of thinking of him w/o that in there.

So the overall story I told was about Addie Joss. The passage in question compared him to some of his contemporaries. Working off of bWar, I had him in the top five for his time. The transcription randomly threw a comma into what should have been one name: Gettysburg Eddie Plank, Athletics LHP.

Given an FIP a run lower than his ERA and a league-leading strikeout rate, I'm going to go with "At Budokan," a well-chosen selection undermined by the arrangements and the backing chorus. In short: Oh, Sister! Wait--I mean, "Oh, Ceaseter!"

Thank you, Francis. I'm glad to know it hasn't hurt the show. I've kind of enjoyed doing them just because I love old radio so much and it's easy for me to pretend that it's a spot from 1940.

I alternate between feeling obligated to read more, curious to read more, wondering why I would be so dumb as to ruin my day by reading more, and mostly end up wishing to escape into some Twilight Zone episode like "Walking Distance" (ie the less fatal variant of "A Stop at Willoughby").

I haven't read the main book that purports to validate their cupboardness. I don't find the cupboard scenario implausible on the surface just given the undisputed record. I guess it's just how packed that cupboard actually is. Have I beaten your metaphor to death yet?

I really want to disregard the most salacious scenarios as unlikely, because they usually are, but reading between the lines, it sounds like Lou was thinking that way too. Either way (or anything in between) I admire her independence.

Sincere question 'cause I just have a passing knowledge of her work: in what sense is she a grifter?

The "ears that hear no swears" must not have grown up in New Jersey! They won't even let you graduate high school if you don't demonstrate proficient swearing in at least five common life situations.

Exactly! Do they need THAT much of a delay? For... cussing? Unexpected full frontal nudity? A surprise appearance by a Republican? We must spare the children!
