If you want an analogy, those of us who remember the West Indies as the dominant force in cricket in the 80s, they are nowhere now & not coming back either.

Welsh rugby could be 30 years in this position or even worse.

8/8 ENDS.

Elevate anything beyond its ceiling & by default everything below it becomes less attractive. In time the lower rungs of the ladder break & then nobody can get to the top. This is exactly where Welsh rugby finds itself.

The proliferation of these party-going daffodil hat wearers waving at the big screen when their team is 45-0 down makes our fanbase look frankly pathetic. However, the WRU know that without these people they are now sunk financially. So it's catch 22 all of the WRU's making.

The faux Welsh who turn up at the Millennium care not one iota about the outcome because it doesn’t matter to them. That is not to denigrate the 10-15% of people that truly care but I'm sure they are sick of the stage/hen do vibe as well. 5/

The pathway through to the international game is pretty much broken beyond repair & the youth set-up is in tatters. Add in a grassroots game that is on its last legs with teams unable to find 15 players to field a side & you have a picture of dereliction from top to bottom. 4/

The regional game is a busted flush as a result, no income generated, just a drain on a diminishing resource. Heck, I imagine that Cardiff & Swansea (probably Wrexham too) all get an average attendance that would outstrip all 4 regions put together, so the fan and player base isn't there.

A professional game needs proper investment, Wales is a poor country with no commercial arm, certainly not one that’s going to waste its resources on sport and as a result of the above, the WRU don't have the acumen to help.

Get ready for a really depressing thread. It's a mess. We are finally getting our just deserts for the WRU being an absolute shiteshow for the entire period of professionalism. The WRU is still run like a local golf club as if it was still the amateur 80's. So that won't change at all. 1/

1994. The 'Kerry Dixon' Testimonial.
We were David Pleat sentimentality and a injury-time equaliser away from a Luton v Oldham Cup Final.
