At some point the UK's going to have to change its diplomatic stance vs. the current US presidency if its talk of protecting the rule of law is to mean anything. Imagine if the PM called for MPs and Lords to be sentenced to death for doing the same. Unhinged, authoritarian, fascist.

Total spend (party and candidates) 2010-2024, Con v Lab.

NB. not incl. joint candidates yet. Big switch in 2024. Might explain lack of changes to spending limits + donation caps in statement just now from minister Rushanara Ali in Parl.

This would allow those holding jobs that genuinely advance the public interest e.g. doctors, lawyers, army reservists etc. to continue serving the country while representing their constituents.

Labour made a clear commitment to reform the rules on MPs' second jobs. Now is a good time to deliver.

ICYMI @electoralcommission.org.uk published candidate spending data yesterday for the 2024 UKPGE. Highlights + implications 👇

1) Most spent post-election in last 10yrs: £23m compared to next largest, £16.4m in 2019 NB. not adjusted for inflation but costs of campaigning have decreased in this time.

This news shows what's wrong with our current political system. It suggests those with deep enough pockets can buy an election. Our democracy is being bought by a small group of wealthy donors. We need to take big money out of politics not put more in www.transparency.org.uk/sites/defaul...

Thanks @appgonacrt.bsky.social for hosting yesterday's launch event for our new paper, which provides a blueprint for taking big money out of UK politics www.transparency.org.uk/publications...

Very timely discussion given rumours that Musk is considering a $100m intervention in our democracy

Moscow claims parts of US-made missiles have landed in Russia [while it occupies vast parts of Ukraine, a sovereign country, and bombards its population daily with Iranian and Russian-made missiles, killing scores of innocent civilians]
