‘A Black Afternoon’
Charcoal & Varnish sketch.

'Over wide open stretches of undulating fields the wind blew furiously, icy cold cutting like a razor. Clustered here and there were oases of timeless pools within black wet forests that fractured the driving force, dissipating it for sweet relief.'

Read a brutal headline today; 'Stoke-on-Trent becomes the first city in the UK to declare a heritage emergency' .. simultaneously found this in an interesting book of stories preserved on historic postcards and it illuminates how there's always something new to be found from a rich history!

Went to see an old friend this afternoon! All that remains of Weatherby's Falcon Works in Hanley.
There's a tragic beauty in this intricately constructed but monstrous structure; a downdraught oven now naked and bereft of its hovel casing. Each strewn brick a piece of Stoke-On-Trent history.

Early stroll. I imagine I am walking vertically, not horizontally. A half-eaten apple next to a fallen leaf. The breeze wrestles with the still air. A man carries a tray of loaves from a van. An empty settee in a bright room.
