How can live music culture help us rethink the ethics of algorithms when their operations are indeterminate in real time?

This past weekend, I explored this question at the Failing Media Conference in Chicago.

To recalibrate the visibility of their communities, scene participants embraced a set of spatial-temporal tactics of smartphone use (and non-use) — from waiting for last-minute announcements, ephemeral sharing on social media, to "no phone on the dance floor."

With event-sharing platforms like Resident Advisor that are readily available through the smartphones at hand, it becomes faster and easier to access a community that strives to remain under the radar and maintain a reduced level of visibility.

Through 2 years of fieldwork and 27 interviews, I trace how participants of underground electronic' dance music scenes reconfigured their shared culture of secrecy with the advent of smartphones.
