Penultimate day at the archive of the Italian Foreign Ministry, and not enough time to finish all the work 😭
November 20, 2025 at 3:48 PM
Good morning from sunny Rome☀️

The parrots in the garden of my hotel are already awake and make a lot of noise 🦜🦜🦜

I am on ny way to the archive of the Italian Foreign Ministry.

Have a good start into the week 😊

Rome without public transport is another level of evil

In order to get to the archive of the Italian Foreign Ministry, I had to get up at 5am because there we no buses after 8:29am

At least I had an excellent croissant and 2 coffees for €4 at a local bar 🥐☕️☕️

And this evening I enjoyed the sunset

Evening lights on St. Peter's Square

I managed to get a ticket for the dome of St Peter's Basilica without queuing & climbed all the 551 steps to the top 🙃

The internal height of the dome from floor to top is 117m, the outer diameter 59m, the inner diameter 41,5m

The views inside the vault and from the dome over Rome are breathtaking

Today I visited the St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. It was terribly overcrowded, but breathetakingly beautiful.

When I arrived at the packed St. Peter's Square after passing the security checks, Pope Leo XIV was just finishing the Angelus prayer.

Having breakfast on the beautiful roof terrace of my hotel in Rome

This pigeon tried (unsuccessfully) to steal my croissant 🐦‍⬛

It is so warm that you cabn sit outside in short sleeves at 9:30 am ☀️

Rome by night (Piazza Navona and Pantheon)

Yesterday I went to the archive of the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome. Although you are only allowed to order 3 files per day they are so big that it is hardly possible to get through them in the 5 hours that the archive is open

Back to the archive today, searching documents on war correspondents

The garden of my hotel in Rome is full of little green parrots. In the morning and evening they make an incredible noise when they fly around and assemble on the trees 🦜🦜🦜

They are so fast; it is difficult to get them photographed

9 am, I am the first visitor in the beautiful reading room of the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome. It was a long day with 9 hours of work - pretty exhausting. Reading Italian documents is another level of difficulty 😭

A room with a view in Rome

[Facing the park of Villa Torlonia, formerly belonging to the Torlonia family.

Mussolini rented it from the Torlonia for one lira a year to use as his state residence from the 1920s onwards. He and his family lived there for 18 years.

Today it is a pretty public park)

The museum of the Italian Alpini is situated on the Doss Trento, a hill overlooking Trento. In close vicinity to the Museum is the Mausoleum of Cesare Battisti, consisting of a circle of 16 white colums and erected during the Fascist era (1935). The views from the hill over Trento are spectacular.

Yesterday I visited the archive of the Museo Nazionale Storico degli Alpini. #AvisWaterman accompanied the Italian mountain fighters many times & they respected her.

The officers and soldiers who run the beautiful museum (that is part of the Italian defence ministry) were extremely kind & helpful.

Today's research at the archive of the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino at Trento yielded 2 letters witten by #AvisWaterman to Cesare Battisti and his widow.
October 27, 2025 at 8:37 PM
Off to Italy for a month of research in Trento (3 days) and Rome (3,5 weeks) for my biography of #AvisWaterman, the London Times' only female war correspondent during WWI, reporting from the Italian front 1915-1917.
