Two dalmatians (adult and pup) I painted for a customer.
I was asked to draw them realistically but with a cartoonish twist, and to keep the frame wide enough for other breeds (should I paint a series), but not so much that the smaller one (e.g., dachshund) would get overwhelmed by the background.

For the cartoonish mood, I used a style similar to that of the backgrounds from the animated series from the late '80s/early '90s.

As for the second condition, I found an average size among all the breeds that were being considered, and then had the larger animals squat, and the smaller on some kind of dais.

I also elected to paint the dogs and the background separately in order to keep a high quality picture with as small an expense as possible.
