There's also some plausibility problems with the plot but I don't care about that. What bothers me is that this film lacks self awareness. It lacks self awareness in exactly the same way the antagonist does!

Most alarmingly, the stated motivations of Fletcher are presented uncritically, when clearly he's just an archetypical bully who wants power and revenge. But the film is more interested in what he says is his motivation, even though we all know he's lying (lying to himself as well).

Jazz historically being a gutter, populist art form being consumed by the academy is another topic the film could have been interested in but doesn't even seem to notice.

How many lady musicians do we see? Maybe 5% of the musicians we see are women. But in the big breakup scene, there's no attempt to confront, or even portray, the protagonist's necessary misogyny as a motivator. Ludicrous.

With players getting paid you'd assume that coaches would get relatively less, and I think eventually they will. A rational system they'd be getting paid 1/10 what they get now. Some school/ad will realize they should slash coach pay and raise player pay and they'll have found a market inefficiency.
