She underscored destruction of the Amazon as "the most dangerous thing happening to our climate and health" as it both pushes livestock and humans into natural systems where they interact with new pathogens, and is it destroys ecosystems that contribute to the planet's resilience.

This week brought significant developments regarding bird flu. These include the first severe case of H5N1 in the US (from a different strain than that circulating in cows) & Gov. Newsom's proactive declaration of a state of emergency in light of more cases being detected in California dairy cows.

From childhood germophobe to infectious disease researcher: Victoria Avanzato, an IM resident in Stanford's Global Health Track who is also in the Translational Investigators Program, researches Nipah virus, a deadly but less-known zoonotic disease.
