Families are routinely forced to mitigate the circumstances of economic hardship, including relying on family for childcare. Acting like that’s an unrealistic expectation and choosing to fully fund every living metric to assess poverty standards instead is going to result in skewed numbers.

I don’t believe that’s my issue. The premise is that by taking into account the real cost of necessities, the median family income of $80k is “deep poverty” and $136k is borderline. That first requires agreement about these typical expenses, and I think the childcare figure is questionable.

If you’re suggesting I *prefer* people use a patchwork of childcare solutions by highlighting something I perceived as inaccurate, that’s very disingenuous. Obviously I’d love for parents to have all their childcare needs met. But we’re discussing typical expenses, not personal beliefs.

Nobody is saying that? The guy was trying to make a more accurate reflection of the poverty line using the estimated expenses for a family of four. This was a criticism of a factor included in his revised estimate. I didn’t realize the assessment was meant to incorporate our policy aims too!

Agree. It’s much more common to rely on a patchwork of childcare solutions—grandparents, extended family, alternating shifts by the parents, older siblings. Including this cost is a reflection of the author’s experience, but IMO it’s very, very atypical for (real) low income families.

The New York Times' story about Trump calling for the execution of members of Congress ran on Page 16 today, with an itty-bitty promo on the front about halfway down the page. No wonder Trump thinks he can get away with anything.
