So simple and subtle and on the surface nice. Just the same way it was when he'd rolled into the parking lot of the grocery store and said, all cool and collected, that they needed an Electric for a job. He should have listened to Travis. He should never have gotten into that fucking car. Seeing Garrett now — he looks fucking unchanged, save for a shorter buzz of his hair — is making everything shake. It's like when that fucking mind reader checked him to make sure he hadn't talked to cops about Marcus' operation; like something is probing into his mind and looking for something, trying to pry out the memories and bring them back into the front of his thoughts. "You're damn right you owe me," Connor spits, and lets his power leak into his eyes. "But you can start by never coming near me again. Go fuck yourself, Garrett." Fucking a man with power meant that they could push each other. Garrett could use his TK and have Connor against a wall before he could blink. Connor could just touch Garrett and fry him from the inside, if not just send him into cardiac arrest. That was heady; the knowledge that when they touched each other, they both wanted it. The fact that when Connor overpowered Garrett, Garrett was letting him, and Connor knew it. When Garrett took Connor by the neck and held him down, Connor was letting him, and Garrett knew. It made it all so much more hot. "Be who you are," Garrett had told him, "and take what you want." Garrett guessed that Connor had really taken that advice to heart; he'd just never would have been able to guess that what Connor wanted was him.

The men who are truly dangerous do not try to scare others away. They do not build fences around themselves made of barbed wire, that allows people to see but that threatens to cut them if they get too close." Akram paused, his gaze going far away. "The truly dangerous men are charismatic, and they smile at you while they slip a knife between your ribs, or a venomous snake into your children's bed." Carl watched his expression harden. "So I am kind to you, Carl, because I know that you are not a bad man."

Mathias hisses, low and dangerous. "You have embarrassed me enough; don't make it worse." He took a sharp breath in through his nose and bit out, "If you insist on talking this out, we will do so in my office." "Don't touch me," he snarled, and raised up a finger to point it at Flynn with the same intent and promise as if he'd held a dagger to his throat. "Mathias—" "You followed me back here, which means you think you have something worth explaining. Speak before I change my mind about listening." "Mathias, please, this is a huge misunderstanding. It's just been... You've..." Flynn waves his hands back and forth between their bodies. "It wasn't–" "His hands on you?" Mathias interrupted, cutting off the trite, mundane it wasn't what it looked like excuse. "You think I'm just some common slut?" Flynn asked, and Shaw could hear the genuine hurt in his voice. It cut through Shaw like a knife. "You think I see you that way? After everything we've been through?" "You'll get over it," Shaw muttered, his anger turning venomously inwards. "There's other, better fish in the sea." "Stop that! Where the hell is this coming from?" "How long, Flynn?" Silence. He felt the hand on his shoulder twitch. "I saw your face. You'd been caught out. How long? How many?" "Most of my life," Flynn answered quickly, and the tone made Shaw flinch.
