Earlier this year, Elisa Morgera ( @unsrclimatehrights.bsky.social ) and I published a Policy Brief about the urgency of respecting the precautionary principle on deep-sea mining as a useful tool to contribute to the regulatory process

It is an important step in a process that must be centered on #humanrights, the right to a #healthyenvironment and the #precautionary principle to ensure effective protection of the environment, the ocean and the climate system, as the #ICJAO recently concluded.

to advance the adoption of #ExploitationRegulations of the #DeepSeaBed, a common heritage of humankind.

Also positive the express mention to integrity of #ecosystems and #ecosystembased approach. The establishment of the Just Transition mechanism is also an important advance.

Adaptation and finance are areas where advances were too far from what is needed.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
‼️ Just Transition decision is very important advance, with key #humanrights language, aligned with the Paris Agreement, and including the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. Its in the preamble as well a the operative part, which is good step forward.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Though the support from the Presidency to the First international conference to phase out of fossil fuels in April, by Colombia and The Netherlands can be a good opportunity to advance the solutions and results that COP could not reflect.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
🛎️ Pending from Mutirao was express mention to #fossilfuels, an unfortunate aspect that Parties could not solve.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
🔔 The Conference on trade mentioned in the Mutirão decision also brings a good opportunity to make sure that international trade is aligned to human rights and supports advancing climate solutions, instead of making it worse.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Agreements including the Global implementation accelerator and the Belem Mission to 1.5, which must also include human rights and the human right to a healthy environment at the center, as rights can strengthen these initiatives, making sure they are inclusive, strong and participatory.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
🌴 The mention of forests, land and the importance to protect the ocean 🌊 are also important advances, and vital opportunities for the parties to reflect in concrete actions.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Other important positive aspects of mutirão is the reference to work from & strengthen multilateralism, essential for world peace and humanity’s benefit.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
This needs to continue and will even been better to refer to the obligation to fulfill human rights, and also include strong human rights language in the operative part.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Also includes an express reference to the human right to a clean, #healthy and sustainable environment, which is very important and COP decisions have done so since the right to a healthy environment was recognized by the UN in 2022.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
‼️ Mutirão decision, includes an express reference to the obligation to respect, promote and consider HRs obligations, in line with the Paris Agreement.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Here a brief reflection on the main decisions, highlighting key advances and pending aspects to advances and outcomes that the planet and people need:
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Expectations were high because this was the first COP after the advisory opinions, including from the ICJ. Agreements were possible though not in the level needed, thus continued efforts and decision from States are needed to make sure actions aligned with international law obligations are achieved.
November 25, 2025 at 1:28 AM
If anything Parties can recall #ParisAgreement language and based on best available science, underscore that 1.5 should be framework.
👀 Remaining around and at #COP30 for a few hours. States must achieve the decision that people and the planet needs.

With COP30 talks in "crisis", countries are urged to unite
A group of 29 countries - mainly from Europe, Latin America and small islands - reject the main text, saying it is "weak" for omitting their demand for a fossil fuel transition roadmap
